I need a new clutch! ... (and more)
This might be long, but I really need some help, as I only have a week to fix this, and get my exhaust in ...
Okay here's the deal. . . When I sit a a light with the car in neutral and my foot off the clutch, it humms like an i-dont-know-what. When i press the clutch and/or put it in gear, it stops.
I have heard ... throw-out bearings??? possible?
When I accelerate in first gear from stop to around 10 mph (after ~10 mph there's too much road noise), I can hear a noise that kinda sounds similar to a train; the same humm as before, but in an on/off pattern. Kind-of like something is outta allignment around the flywheel, or that area.
Any ideas?
Also when I start from dead stop in first gear, I have a ton of clutch chatter, that I cant seem to avoid. Sometimes worse than others.
Another thing is that my clutch pedal is very stiff, and I like it like that. If I get a new clutch, will that affect the stiffness? I have driven some T-5's that the clutch pedal feels like a piece of paper hanging. Dont want that. How do I keep it stiff? (no viagra jokes, please)
NOW -
What do I need to be looking for. What type of clutch can or can't I put in. I heard something about being able to put in a 9, 10, or 11 inch clutch??? Is this making any sense to anyone?
I want to put in something better than the stock clutch, but I dont want anything too much, as this is my daily driver, and I do frequently end up in traffic.
Also I have heard that I should get a new flywheel, or have mine turned. Could a flywheel out of alignment be causeing any of the previously mentioned problems?
Any suggestions or comments welcome.
Thanks,
KZAD

Ok, I was having the same problems. Your throwout bearing is toasted, and your pilot bearing might be shot as well. As for clutches, Im putting in a Centerfored Dual Friction now, and Ive heard that they are softer to the pedal. Centerforce claims %90 more holding power over stock... well see about that. Any time you put in a cluch, you should have the flywheel cut as well. That will provide the maximum about of tranny life.
Also, make sure you break in the the clutch properly as per the manufacturers directions, usually about 500 miles of normal stop and go daily driving.
Good Luck!

i prefer a BORG brut force clutch. its always been a better than stock replacement and keeps a firm pedal like you are looking for.
Well I just put my centerforce DF clutch in about 100 miles ago. All I can say is *WOW*. That clutch is smooth. Light, but noticable, pedal effort and did I mention it's smooth? Seems to hold the power well but I haven't tried yet, still letting the clutch bed in.

i have the chatter too. i blew up a ram stock replacement disc and replaced it with a hayes street strip disc. i'm happy but still have the chatter (probably due to flywheel).
