My rear differential is making noise??...

Hey all, I've noticed this sound before but never knew where it was coming from. Its when I make a turn like 90 degree turn, I hear a "whirring", first I thought it was the power steering pump, they're loud, and kind of "whine". But today, I had my music down, and turning slow in the parking lot, and I could hear this whirrrr whirrrr whirrrrrrrr noise. It happens EVERY time I turn. It sounds like its coming from behind me.. my differential? gears? posi? I went around in a circle in a parking lot, and it kept making the noise. The sound is like a combination of "whirrrrr", a zipper zipping up, and bubbling water, if that helps . What is this noise? Whys it there?? Any help would be appreciated.
..Oh BTW, today I was going down a hill, and missed my turn, and since no one was around, I decided to stop, and reverse back up the hill into a driveway to turn around... but for some reason I pushed the gas, and there was mutliple THUMPS coming from the rear. Did I hit the gas too early, that the gear didn't engage just yet? What happened there??

Sounds like posi needs a fluid change, use genuine GM posi additive.

It could be the u-joint going bad.
I would take the cover off and inspect the ring gear also. Missing teeth can cause that too.

Is that the problem, from the fact it makes noise, or the fact it thumped? Or both?
I was thinking maybe I didn't let the car fully shift into reverse, or maybe I was rolling down the hill, and the gear didn't mesh or something. See the thing is, if I slowly push on the gas in reverse, its just fine. But sometimes if I hit it hard, it has like hesitating tendency and kinda thumps, weird.
BTW, if it is bad ring gears and stuff, that mean I can get new gears? Cool, now my car can move quicker... however I have a 9 bolt . Where would I ever find them??
