"Cones" in the rear end????

I'm currently speaking with a guy about buying a carrier and 3.27 gears for a BW 9 bolt rear end and he mentioned something about "cones" in the rear end. He said that they needed to be replaced. Do these "cones" have something to do with the posi and if so, can they be replaced without buying a new carrier. Also, if they can be replaced, how much are these "cones" and how hard are they to replace? TIV

i just installed a cone style posi in my 10 bolt. the cones are part of the posi. they are fitted to the carrior, causing them to grab when you spin the tires. it is a hard thing to describe. maybe someone else can help me out to give you a better idea.

While clutch type posis are rebuildable cone type posi's are not. The cone rides on the inside of the carrier so it's usually worn out too. I don't know of any source to buy new cones.

Ok, so if the cones are shot then the posi is shot and I need to just buy a new carrier. Or can the posi part be replaced somehow? I know just about nothing when it comes to the workings of the rear end. I just know gear sizes and the difference between posi and not.

Scratch the above.... I saw the answer after I asked the question.

Thanks guys.

If the cones are shot that means the carrier is shot, you need a whole new posi unit.

you can machine the cones down and shim it tight again. cheaper than buying a new posi.
