U-Joints, Please Help

How do you know when your U-Joints are going out? I have a shift kit in my 700r4 and whenever it shifts (even at low speeds) it kind of "clunks" under the car. I know it's not the trans mount. Does this sound like U-joints? Also how hard is it to change and are there any certain brands or type to buy?? Thanks
