2.8 exhaust
2.8 exhaust
Hey,
I have an 1989 2.8 MPFI. I've had it for about a year and a half and I've replaced tires, transmission, stereo and just got it painted. Now I want to get a new exhaust. I could get some 2.8 headers from a friend that works at the local speedway, but as far as the rest of the tailpipes, y pipe (is this really necessary? could i go dual from the headers?) and tailpipes. I'm only 17 and saving for college and don't have a ton of money to spend. Would it be cheaper to just by a total exhaust system and install it myself, or by the headers (i could get them for 150) and buy the rest parts separately? any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, i read the posts about that electric supercharger and was wondering if any of you guys tried it yet. Thanks,
Jason

Since your from ________ you must not need to worry about emisions checks. Keep the cat, dynomax & others cat backs can be had for $150 & up. The crossover/Y-pipe should be stock. If you go w/ the headers, either go into a 1 pipe system, or go w/dual cats. Installing a cat back is relatively easy (unless you havn't yet searched for the link to install the I-pipe
) but can be done.

Defaintly jump on the headers, they are very hard to find, di i mention VERY hard to find. They were only made for a short while then discontinued. So yeas, buy the headers now, and get things seperatly, once you have all the parts, we'll be glad to give you any help you need to get it installed properlly
You're in college or saving.
Figure out your return on investment.
What's worth more, eating or noisy exhaust?
NOW figure out hw to have both.
ME?
First go find an S-10 Blazer with the 2.8 ONLY!
Grab that "Y" pipe.
Next Go call
800-888-8892
Don's Hot Rod in Tuscon AZ (
)
Order a Performance For Power CC for your car, 2 1/2" In & Out.
Next scour the wrecking yards for a late model Z-28, Eighties version.
Grab that I-pipe, it's larger that the V-6 & it'll fit perfect.
Also scout around for Muffler shops removing the I-pipe from a late model V-6 F body, too (that'll be larger than our 80's 2 1/2" V-6, too!).
The later V-6 (& early V-8s) I pipes are 2 3/4", I've read, never measured, yet. (Maybe I'll visit a show room soon!)
Figure out what muffler sound you like and order that from Don's also.
FIND A MUFFLER SHOP THAT WILL INSTALL THIS STUFF.
Headers are not SMOG legal, never WERE in your model year V-6 configuration, nor mine nor anyone elses.
Nor will they ever be.
So don't throw away your money on them (or Zero return on investment)
Now
wanna make HP you feel?
open hood, look at passenger side exhaust, straight down.
Modify that "Y" junction (use one from the Blazer) and you gain an instant 5-7HP all thru the RPM range.
Free it up with a modern efficent CC (gain more smoother faster exhaust flow, not HP!). You're increasing your I-pipe size, more exhaust flow, quicker. Out the back, thru a hi flow muffler.
You HP gain will not be high (maybe 10 if you're lucky).
BUT
You'll feel this more HP in the seat of your pants (you've gained LOTS OF TORQUE!)
You're eating
You've got a roof over your head
You're educating yourself to gain more income.
You spent the money on quality welder/muffler guy
Your parts cost may creep up to about $150 total.
Labor is about same.
Great return on investment.
With the saved money,
I HAD A BLAST WITH COLLEGE WOMEN
Cheerleaders were the most fun
