IF you are in West LA area or Santa Monica, I can set you up with an HONEST/FAIR smog guy.
Who does your labor?
What's your budget
BE HONEST

The best book you can ever buy is from http://www.helminc.com - the GM service manual.

Book #2 on my list is the 82-92 Camaro manual, by Haynes, $15 at any parts store.

Drew recommends the Chilton "total care" book for the 3rd gens.

You might need to have the trans rebuilt. I know; it sucks; I'm on my 3rd trans right now- and it's also ready to die.

Get ready to put some $$$ into the tranny. Mine had(still has) this exact same problem before I parked it 6 months ago. It needs a rebuild, and if your car is a daily driver it needs it fast. It is going to get worse real fast.
