Bottom Line on Adjusting TV Cable

I guy says WOT then release the lock down, that will bring the adjuster forward all the way. Another guy says WOT and then release the hold-down and push in the adjuster all the in.
I tried both and the only difference I felt was 1-2 shift was a little harder with the adjuster in. This is for a '86 700r4. What is the right way???

Uh, the first guy is absolutely wrong, you don't want the adjuster to come forward all the way.

"By the book" is what's mentioned off of thirdgen.org's tech section, on adjusting the TV/detent cable for TH350/TH700 trannies. The second method sounds like transfixleo's from the Transmission/Drivetrain board.

But that first method is wrong; let the adjuster come all the way forward like that, and you'll be running on verrry low line pressure. That's how guys burn up their trannies; they drive for too long with the cable misadjusted too far forward. If you change your oil, you should check the TV cable at the same time.

You were feeling a harder 1-2 shift because (using the 2nd method you mentioned) you put the line pressure back to where it should be.

Thanks Tom, so pushing the adjuster in is right. I thought so, because of the firmer 1-2 shift.

Ok...I figure I'll put my two cents in on the subject...after reading my service manual...the one that the dealers use...it says to basically push the little slide all the way back in and then go WOT with the throttle lever...this is where its spose to be set at...I usually go with this and adjust it back a click or two here and there if needed...if you pull it too far forward it will cause line pressure...which is a good call Tom...however...I was reading that if it is misadjusted for too long the transmission will go into high pressure mode for some reason...but in the end it will burn out the tranny....but too much pressure is also bad because then you'll be shifting late and usually kick down is wicked hard...that will also cause excessive wear...I did the WOT method and then moved it back one or two clicks and I don't have any problems anymore...thats the way I did it and it worked...but I really couldn't tell you casue the transmission is so damned complicated...i figure to just pull the pan off and play with the lever that works it all inside...
