Lets play whats that sound...

Ok first details.. this is a 2.8l v6 in a 1986 camaro sports coupe before I owned it the thing sat under a tree for about 7 years.. I noticed my horn wasn't working and no fuses were bad so I went to take it.. then listening to my engine I noticed that if I get my ear close to the drivers side of it I hear this hissing sound.. I can't pin down its exact location but it sounds like its coming from somewhere around the intake.. on the other hand the other side sounds like its going "put put put put".. I know the manifold on this side has a hole in it (more than one exhaust shop told me and one guy even let me listen to it) but I can't really fix that right now.. so for this.. whats the hissing like sound on the drivers side.. and is that put put put sound on the other side the hole in my manifold or something else?

I was thinking the same thing , vacumn leak .Check that big hose behind the upper and middle intake that goes into the intake manifold ....This car did not run for 7 years and you got it to start and run ? ? ?

As far as I know the guy who sold it to me changed the oil.. plugs.. wires.. and put new tires on it with an old battery.. he tried to change the fuel filter but he said he sprayed the whole thing in wd-40 and it didn't turn at all and he didn't want to break it.. I got it now and put a new battery in it (last one died) and a rebuilt alternator.. changed the radiator fluid... put a bunch of misc parts in it (hood struts.. replaced some lights and stuff) and i changed some of the power steering fluid though most of it looked all right.. also I guess the exhaust was rusting away and someone rigged up some exhast that didn't even go on it up there.. I just had that replaced with a new stock like exhuast from the cat back.. I know it was a bad move as I should of gotten the one from summit but I needed it fixed fast..that pipe right behind the cat was just all rust... i'm still holding back on the tranny fluid change... it changes pretty rough tho.. like you shift to reverse (its an automatic) and it going "bump" and then its set to go... I'm planning on painting it as it was a van nuys paint job and most of the paint is gone and some spots looks like people spray painted it.. there isn't too much rust on it as the bottom of the drivers side door lip is rusted away.. and the lip of the hood has a lot of rust on it.. soon after i'll haul out the v6 and rebuild it.. provided I have the $$$ to pull it off...

Oh and I drive it to work every day (about 7 miles) .. it seems ok except for the weird thing where after it sits outside in the parking lot and sun all day it doesn't start.. I pump the gas and around 7-10 minutes later it might turn over... I think it might be the steering column as I had it apart this weekend and when I turn the piece that the lock cyclinder turns then the car starts everytime but when I assemble the column again the car only starts sometimes.. something is odd because its just a hair more that the key cyclinder needs to go but for some odd freakin reason when its all together then SOMETIMES it just won't turn that last hair it needs to go (and yes I got a new key cyclinder.. same problem).. I'm wondering if my steering column doesn't go to the car as there was a bolt or two missing here and there.. and the rod for my dimmer lights is just hanging there.. and on top of that my horn doesn't work (still trying to pin this down.. all fuses are good)... but the start up thing is weird.. it won't start for like 10 min.. I get it started.. drive it home.. and turn it off and start it up as much as I want.. sitting in the shade.. I can go to it a few hours later and start it right up... its the strangest thing... it happenes everyday after work.. start in the morning.. after work... and its sitting in the sun all day... no start for about 5-10 min.. take it home.. starts ok any time... I think its trying to just **** me off after a long work day.. whadda think?

stomping the gas pedal on your car will just give your right calf & tps a work out. Ignition switch itself (not the cylinder) or relay? Are the cables/connections good?

At least you had better luck w/yours. mine was sitting garaged for 2 yrs, would crank but not start. But then, having grey sludge in the oil pan wouldn't have exactly been good for it either

The steering column rebuild will eliminate the horn problem.
Don't laugh.
Wrong gas cap?
Rest is just trial and error and "knowledge".
AND a long list of things to buy.
I've rebuild my one tilt column about 10 times.
I'm getting another!
Rebuilt my 1974 Corvette tilt column once.
Older parts seem more durable?
