Fuel pump for MPFI V6
Fuel pump for MPFI V6
1) Does anyone know if we are running 100psi in-tank fuel pumps on the MPFI V6 camaro's?
2)What fuel pressure does our MPFI operate at?
The reason I am asking is in my '89 Chev truck, I originally had a 100psi in-tank pump with plastic gears and switched it to the '89 Vette in-tank pump which is 125psi and metal gears(i.e.-longer life) and added an adjustable regulator and larger injectors.
I am figuring on the same upgrade for the V6 Camaro and would appreciate any info on our pump/ regulator setup.

Thanks Dale. I checked with the dealer today and they told me aprox the same thing. They recomended sticking with the same stock pump even if I were to upgrade to 19lb injectors, the stock unit puts out plenty.

This is the reason I am so interested in CHC's headers. If I can get them, Ill drop in the H.O. 3.4, Port the plenium, add a larger throttle body and injectors and Im hoping for about 160-180hp out of it while still cornering on rails because of the lightweight V6.
This car is just the wifes grocery getter. I have to drive it once in a while when we go places so I'm making it fun for me to drive.
She likes ot they way it is but is sick of me complaining about what a slug it is every time I get in it.

i feel your pains, 3 credit cards, truck payment, 2 other cars, and looking for a house. You stated 19lb fuel injectors, I pulled one out my drawer last night that I had put in my dodge, and low and behold it will fit in the camaro. It has 4 nozles on the bottom that stick into the spray area where the camaro one has 6 way up inside the injector, and has to go thru a tunnel to exit. I looked and both are the same ohm rating. Think I should get more and give it a try??

I love the Get up & go, while still using the AC.
Yet for a traffic light, I will turn off AC, as I may need that spot, instead of the other person who's trying for it.
Best is cruising over the Sepulveda Pass, AC on full blast. Plenty of power.
I can't wait for a shipment ot arrive in CA, myself.
The exhaust is so restricted on these engines.
Especially the "Y" pipe. Or "T" Minus 5-10 HP!
Find a "Y" from a 93-95 3.4 for custom work.
I'm doing that with the one I got with my 3.4 purchase. I still need a late model "I" pipe. Trying to find one for free as it is tossed out.

If its a fairly stock 2.8 I wouldn't recommend it. You probably just install an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and bump up the psi until you get exhaust smoke then back it off alittle. You generally need a better exhaust to do this. A performance exhaust will lean out the motor slightly.
I've heard others say that the ford type 19lb injectors are crap and to stay away from them.
Ked, I'm hoping for 160-180 rear wheel ponies

Convert to a stick, gain 20 rear wheel HP SOMETIMES!
After I upgrade my exhaust, then I'll be impressed by my 3.4 again.
I just know how choke up the pipe does this engine.
No time to play yet.

its a 3.1l auto. I plan on putting a dynomax on it. Already has CAI, tb mod, 180 stat, power crank. Im not going for a race car, but a good zip around town car. I put the ford injectors in my dodge and it got more mpg, no hp though

The MPFI GM pump we use has a dead head pressure of 60 PSI. And there's one slight difference between the 5.0/5.7 TPI and 2.8 MPFI pump, and that's fuel flow. Someone on the TPI board checked into this a year or so ago, and found out the 5.0/5.7 pump has a different part #, and a higher output rate.
If you do replace the pump with a new one, don't re-use the pulsator. Either replace it with a new one, or use a short piece of high-pressure fuel line in it's place. The pulsator is designed to "quiet" the fuel system, and uses o-rings to seal to the pump output and fuel line- it doesn't use clamps. The o-rings can crack and leak, and cause problems!
The first time I changed my pump, I didn't know this, and re-used the pulsator. The second time I changed my pump, I used the short piece of highpressure fuel line that came with the pump, and regular screw-drive clamps. I don't really notice any extra noise (if it's louder, it's not much louder!), and haven't had any problems yet.

I had always thought they were the same, too; that we used a v8 pump. I always thought a nice boost for the V6 would be to use an aftermarket in-tank high-flow pump, especially since they don't cost much more than a stock in-tank pump. But after that guy looked the info up, it seems the better "upgrade" for the 2.8/3.1 MPFI motor would be to use a V8 TPI pump. It would flow more; but the aftermarket high-flow TPI pump might flow too damn much. Sure, the regulator would take care of it, but it'd be extra cash spent for no real benefit.
Damn, can't find the message with a search; looks like it's too old. I thought we had archives somewhere?
