Fuel pump bye bye I think

Last night was starting out great, I'm on my way to the county fair, car is running great. I'm slowing down to get on the interstate on ramp, and my car stalls. Well, starts right back up and I'm on my way again. Didnt think any more of it. Well, after the fair, my car cranked up, and then suddenly shut off. Oh ****.

THe battery was turning the engine fine, but nothing else was happening. Everytime I clicked the key on, I hear no humming sound. Uh oh.

I got it towed all the way home. I was looking at my Haynes manual on fuel pump check, and it said to put an "energized wire" into the g terminal of the aldl and listen to see if the pump cuts on. I did and it made a two short gulping sounds, it sounded like a "boomp boomp" a little. Does that mean it still works? The Haynes manual, as some of you have said, is not a good tool for diagnosis, but it's all I have right now.

Is there anything else I should check? At the moment, I don't have a fuel pressure guage (I could borrow that from the neighbors if necessary) and I don't have a multimeter.

If the fuel pump is broken, I am gonna be one unhappy camper. And then I'll have to wait for freakin ever to put my headers on.

Best would be to use the fuel pressure guage.

But you might want to check yuor fuel filiter too.
Mine was almost completely clogged, same problems as you.

Change it fisrt, then check your fuel pressure...

I agree with Kj, definately change the fuel filter first. Just be careful when doing so that you don't bend the metal fuel line. When I changed mine the one wrench sliped out of my hand because it was wet with gas and I ended up bending the line on the one side of the filter.

I think that you can also test if it is an electrical problem by testing the fuel pump relay.

You can get a multimeter from many different places. I bought one from Radio Shack for $10 when I was trying to diagnose problems that I was having with a headlight motor. The one I have probably isn't the best, but it gets the job done. I've seen multimeters at auto part stores (Auto Zone) and sometimes you can find them at Wal-Marts. (I saw one in the automotive electronics isle the other day.)

If the problem does turn out to be your fuel pump give yourself a weekend to do it. I replaced mine about 3 weeks ago. Getting the stuff out of the way to get to the fuel tank isn't super bad assuming that you have a decent set of sockets, and a breaker bar to get the track bar bolts out. The worst part of the job is getting the tank itsself out.

I had a problem simular to this.
My car blew a fuse (ECM/FuelPump), then when I replaced the fuse the pump no longer ran.
What I had to do was pull back the carpet behind the rear seat, and got out a wire tester. It turned out one of the wires had crapped out, so I ended up having my father hard wire it back to the fuse box.

So maybe you just have a wire broken off inside from years of driving. Just a thought.
