I need help PLEASE!!!!

Im desperate, im not sure if this is even the right forum to post in or not. For some time now my girlfriends V6 has been giving her troubles and no one can fix it.

It sporadically will die, if you let it sit for a few minutes, it will restart. After that sometimes it works fine for another few weeks or sometimes it will just keep consecutively dying at all different time intervals. It could run for 1 minute or give you 20 minutes before dying again. Or like i said sometimes it will run no problem for a month. The length of trip makes no difference. But so far everytime, if you let it sit, it will let you drive again.

its just such a weird problem, we had a mechanic drive it for a week and he just couldnt get it to die on him. He speculated it could be the fuel pump, but now we doubt it because of the unpredictability of when it dies. So, Im desperetly hoping someone has had this problem and can tell me exactly what is wrong. Im thinking that it has to be an electrical problem, maybe im wrong.

btw this is a 97 V6 firebird

Need more details....after the car 'dies', will it start up but then maybe die again? Will it make any attempt to start? Does it crank and crank and not start? I doubt it's the fuel pump. If it is a no start condition, turn the key to On but don't start it and listen to see if the fuel pump primes after it's been sitting for a few seconds.

yea thats what i was saying sometimes it will die again othertimes it will run for a week straight no probs. When it dies it just cranks on and on. Untill you actually let the car sit for a bit it wont restart.

Might want to find a new mechanic; this sounds like the classic ignition module failure:

Like KED, I'm also thinking the ignition module. That's the classic "drives fine when cold, stalls when hot, won't start until it's cool, repeat over and over again" ignition module death scenario.
Probably time for a new module... the V6 forum for "rebuild distributor"; you can rebuild the thing for under $100.

Oops- wait- a 97? A 4th gen? Yep, definately the wrong place for that question. Try http://www.camaroz28.com ; a bunch of 4th gen (93-02) guys hang out there. From what I remember, the '97 uses coil packs, no distributor, no ignition module. 'Fact, doesn't GM call that DIS unit (Distributorless Ignition System) an Optispark? I think there were some recalls on the Optispark.

Check out http://www.alldata.com for recall information. You can print out the list and bring it to the mechanic. 'Fact, I think some law was passed that allows a car owner to get the full recall/TSB listing for their car, straight from a dealer's printer, for free.
