Welcome aboard
I would recommend running a search on a shift kit since they are discussed frequently. They are used on automatic transmissions. Most people on this board seem to like the TransGo shift kit (available at summit racing for about $130), as it is a decent package at a reasonable price. Shift kits allow the transmission to shift firmer and harder, so the gears kind of "snap" along, instead of dragging from one in to the next. I put one in my car, and I can tell a difference (tires squeal shifting from 1st to 2nd
). If you are looking for an upgrade, that is one to do. I really can't get in to more details about it, as I just know a few basics on the transmission, but there are plenty of people here who know more about it. Hope this helps.

Avoid the B&M Shift Improver kit. For $20 it seems like a great deal, but it just gives hard shifts, it doesn't help the tranny live longer. Supposedly B&M's kit is half-assed, while the Transgo kit is more thorough. You can install one yourself... I did my kit (B&M Shift Improver Kit) back in '97.
Oh and the B&M Transpak is a rip off. It's the exact same parts as the Shift Improver Kit, but, you also get a new trans filter! Big deal. You can get a trans filter for $12, no need to spend the extra $25 for the B&M one.

Now the question is....using a good kit like a TransGo...will it do anything to shorten the life on an aged, NON-rebuilt transmission?

It all depends on how you drive it. If you still baby it around, no, it'll help it live longer (less time clipping the clutch packs = less heat released = longer life)
If, now you've got a shift kit, you floor it everywhere, constantly peeling out and whatnot, the tranny will die quicker.
