What is the best muffler for a 2.8L?

Okay, I have a 1989 Pontiac Firebird with a 2.8L V6, 4 speed automatic transmission, pretty much stock, wich muffler would make my car sound nice and give me a little more power over my ordinary muffler I have right now?

When I went to the yard, I located on a Z28 a BRAND NEW ARVIN MUFFLER
2 1/2" in AND 2 2 1/2" pipes attached out.
I got installed for forty & he added two new chrome tips, too!
WHO IS ARVIN?
They supply about 75% of the US & foreign market with mufflers.
My car sounds so good now!
I do not like Flowmasters, too loud, not pleasant.
My 3.4 powered ride now sounds very pleasant.
DO NOT overlook the IMPORTANCE OF
a good condition Cat Convertor. When my Cat Convertor died, car sounded like crap even with this muffler I now mentioned.
Got the 2 1/2 AC Delco CC installed, car sounded sweet!
I can't wait to get a 2 1/2" "I" Pipe installed along with a 2 1/2" "Y" pipe from exhaust manifolds. THEN That'll bring me a good solid 7-10HP gain!
Remember it's a package, not just parts for exhaust!
Parts, help, true!

Dynomax Super turbo sounds great on our V6's.

*stupidly ambiguous answer*

Both

Actually, it's bolted on one side, and a slip fit (mine was welded) on the other...

WaOnFire,
This may not be the answer you are looking for, but 3.1's sound very similar to 2.8's, they are pretty much the same engine, with the exception of the 3.1 having longer stroke. I installed the same muffler system on both my 3.1 92 Camaro, and my friends 85 Bird (2.8), and both sounded near identical. It was a flowmaster 80 series, I like mine, it seems to give just a touch more powerful, not worth bragging over, and it makes it nice and loud. Hope I was able to help you out.

Okay, I understand, but wich one sounds the best? I like the sound of big american V8 motors, is their one that sound like them on our 2.8? Between the Dynomax and Flowmaster wich one sounds like a V8?

I'll bet you like the Dynomax better.
Check local yards for any F body cars with new mufflers, may find one that works, too!
I paid $28 for my NEW 2 1/2" in to two, 2 1/2" out WITH ATTACHED PIPES muffler off a wrecked Z-28.
I passed on the new flowmaster muffler set up I spied in the same yard.
I have Flowmaster on my Blazer, the two chamber.
I've had it since 1990.
I wish I got a Flowmaster three chamber installed, instead.
YET, if I have choice, now, I'd pass on the Flowmaster.

PS NO Muffler makes a 60* V6 sound like a V8.
Give up on that thought.

Okay, well, I want something new we don't have any yard here... So, if I choose a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler, will I get a better sound that let's say a normal muffler like the one from GM?

My flowmaster gives my car a nice sound at idle very throughty once it hits above 3000 rpm it gets raspy but it is a good sounding muffler and people say my car sounds like a 8 with it on.. KED85 dosent my flowmaster put out a nice tone?

The Flowmaster is decent.
IT DEPENDS on how it sounds inside car.
Mine in Blazer resonates quite a bit.
I also have the two chamber.
Again I wish I sprung for three chamber from get go!
Seek NEW F Body mufflers, they'll fit!
Never know unless ya call what's ina yard.
Yep a NEW CAR muffler will sound very nice, on out car, too.
Mine on my Firebird is a factory original replacement for the Z-28, yes I got lucky for the cost, everything including installation for about $60-$70.

as far as which muffler would be best

the muffler that reduces backpressure the most would be best for performance

hence a straight through muffler

problem is lots of straight through mufflers ( a.k.a. bullet mufflers) are LOUD

they will work for street but again they are loud

now some of you might htink oh cherry bomb. yes they for the most part are straight through, BUT a lot of them have baffles in there that cause backpressure which will hurt performance so it is not a TRUE straight through muffler

most the straight through mufflers have either cuts in the core of a perforated core that do not stick into the flow of exhuast.

but for the most part you want the best flowing muffler for performance

but now comes sound

that depends on the user.... remember best soudning is in the ear of the beholder.
you might like the sound of hooker aerochamber, but then another person might like the sound of flowmasters and not the hookers.
so asking everyone what is the best sounding one is going to give you a biased opinion and you might end up buying a muffler that you are not too fond of.

best bet there is to ask for soundclips that way you can HEAR the muffler in action and make your mind of there for the sound

but again

straight through is best for performance

WARNING-
There is an unwritten rule in life that if a chick posts a picture of her car, then she must be laying on the hood in some lingerie.
Edit: And I don't want to here the excuse that there is snow outside and its too cold- That actually makes for more attentive shoots.

Good one- but if Hefner con stll do it with Viagra in his mid 70's, I can still manage at 36. Beside, if you younger guys don't break in your motors properly, your fluid will end up all over the place.

I have been breaking in my motor over the last 10 year or so

sure it's nice to have help to make sure things are running right but you can break a motor in all by yourself

Well not necessarily....in those old and overused motors, the clearances loosen up quite a bit...

so lets ask this camarogirl18 how is the clearance on your motor?
everything up to spec?

not leaking any abnormal fluids?

Hey mods, Most other forums I see will have Babes forums or stickies- How about we have a sticky just for V6 babes- You guys can keep it locked and only uplink submitted post pics from lower post. That way there is no B.s. sex talk- Just friendly V6babe pics- we will be the envy of the other posts, send our veiw stats through the roof. Only catch I would suggest is they have to have their v6 F-body in the pic with them to keep things semi clean.

Well i'm cheap when it comes to exhaust. A pipe is a pipe in my opinion and when it comes to mufflers, if it looks like the exit will flow smoothly and the inlets and outlets are big enough for the application, It's got my vote. I have to agree with ked. Flowmaster construction looks obstructive and it's obnoxious, so I used a Dynomax muffler on my RS. Like I said I'm cheap. but, it gives a nice low muffled rumble until you get up to about 3000 wide open. then it starts to popcorn a little. Sounds smooth for the most part though.
