2.8L Bogs after warmup!! Help plz.
Hey guys. Heres what I've got. Its an 87 Firebird withe the good ole' trusty 2.8L.
When I first start it up in the morning its awesome. The thing is actually kind of quick and has great throttle respones. But after this thing warms up it is slow. It seems almost like it is just BOGGING down with too much gas or something. Also the idle gets a little rough and when i sit at a stop light for a long time or traffic just letting it idle the Check engine light comes on the idle defenitaly goes up.
What i was thinking was maybe it is the Ox sensor. Once everything warms up it is telling the computer to send just tom much gas. But i don't know.
Thanks for listening and i look foward to your response!

I had the same problem... But I fixed it... Change you O2 sensor, and pour some engine restore in the oil.. the stuff in a silver can that looks like a beer can... It took about 100 miles of driving and it stopped... In my case it was a mixture of no O2 sensor and I was loosing compression once it warmed up... Another thing does it blow smoke on start up...
Hey...
No it dosen't smoke really. Also I forgot to mention that it smells rich like there is an excess amount of gas being poured in..... COol I will try replacing that ox sensor. It seems like a great place to start. I need an oil change any way so i'll do that with the engine restore!
Thanks a lot,

I know in my case I had a garage hook the car up to a computer and drove around it said that it wasn't going out of open loop.. so I was actually blowing too much gas... So if you know anyone with a computer to hook up see if it thows any codes and see if its switching to closed loop

That would be "Make sure it's going into closed loop"..
Open loop == cold engine, cold O2 sensor. Computer ignores O2 readings and relies on internal tables based on MAF/MAP+TPS+RPM for A/F ratio. (Not sure if it factors previously acquired BLM data into this..)
Closed loop == warm engine, hot O2 sensor. Computer uses MAF/MAP+TPS+RPM loosely, A/F based on O2 sensor readings. Computer corrects MAF/MAP+TPS+RPM tables using BLM tables.

Awesome guys thanks a lot.....well I bought a new O2 sensor toady and went to move my car into the garage when all of a sudden i hear a big squeaking noise and it won't start. I took a look at my alternator and notice that there is a long strand of metal coming out the back along with a slew of Ball Bearings! haha guess ill be replacing the alternator and the O2 tommorow after work!
So is there any chance that it could just be the O2/ MAF sensors?
Also my dad has a portable car scanner....would this tell me about the open loop or should i just take it somewhere?
Thanks for the info!!
After all this is done im gonna go with the Tune up and then start with a cam and some roller tip rockers. Any suggestions on a cam?? Just thought i'd ask.....don't have much experience working on the 60* but i would like my daily driver to have a little more kick...Ie. beat civics on a daily basis! i haate those DAMN things! ha
