Rod Knock???

I think my engine is going to die soon i hope it dosent but anyways. You can hear the engine makeing a clankty or clakity sound on both sides of the motor. Does it sound like Rod Knock? The car drives fine isnt burning oil or anything. When its cold you dont hear it but after the engine heats up you can hear it going clankaty. Any ideas what it is? If i bumped up my oil to 20-50 insted of 10-40 would that help it? I also thought it could do with the timing but i have it set at 10 degrees. If i bumped it to 12 could that help. Basicly i have no money to go and put a new engine in this car. I just want to get evey last mile out of this engine as possible. When it dies then i will go and fix it hopefuly that will be in a year.

When you rev the engine the sound does go away. I awalys remeber it making this noise for the past few years but lately its gotton louder. I also thought it might be something with my valves. the engine has 225,000 miles on it.

when was the last time that you changed your timing chain? it can "rattle" and sound kinda suspicious sometimes. could also be a lifter or rocker arm too....could be several things.

After I blew the first motor in my 1967 Camaro convert, I slipped in a rebuilt engine that was POORLY rebuilt.
It had ROD KNOCK.
Just as if ya hit the pipe with metal tube, rod knock.
I used 50 weight oil to "calm down the knocking".
It never stopped.
I raced a Mercedes with that car up by San Francisco & it didn't blow. I was doing close to 100 MPH (back in 1988, way less traffic).
I eventually sold that running knocking long block for $200. I even let the guy hear the knock he said, that's ok, so the deal was done.
WHY ya won't be that lucky!
Our little V6 haven't enough "meat" to support the impending disaster.
Didn't ya grab that 3.4 mill in Laguna for $150?
Are you OK with the fire?
Better get the Firebird running quicker!
Engine's on it's last legs, warned ya not to waste time "fixing things", cause this could happen, the engine failing in "pieces".

I replaced my timeing chain a few months ago because i thoght that was causing the noise.

KED85 It dosent sound like metel to metel and it does not have the same sound my firebird had when it died and threw both front rods LOL I did a good job killing that engine a whole 20 mins of me driving it.I hope it is done soon i want to see how my new th-400 with a trans go shift kit for strip use and the 455 with all the goodies in it will do. I know i gotta brake it in but still i dream of one day driving it i have waited almost 4 years to really drive it.

I think it could be the valves or just really noisey lifters. A while back probly about 2 years ago when i would drive my car you could hear one of the valves make a very werid noise almost like a sputtering noise. Then it went away. I have never adjusted the valve lash on my car i hope its just the valves.

When this engine goes im still up in the air if i wana do a 3.4 swap my friend owns his own shop and my family has done business with him since like 78 before i was even born. He will do a total rebuild with my 3.1 new everything and give me a 100,000 mile warranty on it for 1300.00. At the same time i wana build my own 3.4 and have it ready by the time this one goes. I hate decisions.

When ya gonna be over at Grams again....?
You OK with the fire out in Simi?
The car still runs right?
NO replacement for displacement.
I've been awaiting to drive my 1967 Camaro Convert again since I pulled that rod knock engine back in 1990!
IF I get this other house (for fixing & selling) I'm after right away, I have to wait more time, too!
Oh well!
