MAF and EGR woes

I am currently having a problem with my idle. After i redid my exhaust manifolds and placed in new gaskets. (My car's a '89 2.8 with 133,000 mi.) I received a code 44, so I worked on the the egr valve and cleaned it out, it got a little better, but still wasn't right. I cleared the computer and now it idles rough and searches between 1000 with a low spot at around 750, like it wants to stall. I checked all the vaccuum lines, no cracks or unpluged lines. Now, when I hit the highway, I'll stay on for a while, like 50 miles, but when i get off, the service light comes on (code 34 always) and the idle smooths out. Can anyone guarantee this is a problem with the MAF? Also, I have a new egr solenoid and exhaust (high flow cat w/ dynomax muffler) Someone please help, I've done searches, but no one has the same problem.

uhm.. code 44 is O2 sensor lean.. not EGR. Probably an air leak into the exhaust when you put the system back together.

As for the MAF code.. there's so much info on this available by searching it's not even funny that you asked, however, you're new, so you're forgiven. Read these.

thanks (smurf?) I don't know what i was doing about the searches, I think I was narrowing down too much, also, I kept getting a message about the word length was too short whenever i wrote 44 or 34, I never thought about leaving them out:

On that note

I STILL throw a 44!!!!! thats with a new motor, injectors and just about everything else (I'm running a 3.4). I've tried and tried to find the problem, just no luck. I'm gonna have a PROM burned for my new motor and throw a new fuel pump and an Adjustable regulator on. I doubt that will even fix it...

have you tried getting the thing checked by a "pro," and by pro i mean someone that has and knows how to use a DSO? That's the only real way to be able to tell if it's really showing lean.

The reason that the idle is so weird is because you disconnected the battery. The ECM lost all memory of the IAC values and needs those reset. All you have to do is take the car out for a drive, all the way up past 40 mph and your smooth idle should return.

Hell yeah! Sometimes i get no code for the longest time, then during a long drive the lite comes on.Im looking for a small clock to fit in the check engine lite hole to cover the lite with, its a pita when im driving with someone and they ask "is your car ok?" and you gotta go through the long story about sensors and the ecm... 2point8 boy.... the "PRO"S" NEVER touch my car and NEVER will!!!! Their is absolutly NOTHING they can do that i cant do myself except rip me off. If i come up with a problem that i dont know how to handle i come here and ask questions like everyone else does. I think its a general thing that people here do the work on their cars themselves....

No doubt about that. What I mean by that is do you have a friend that actually works at a shop? If you do, you can get a hold of a DSO and hook that up to the O2 sensor and see how it's responding.

I totally agree with "pro's" ripping people off, but when I say it, I just mean that they have access to the tools that you, as their friend, can "borrow"

I don't know if anyone still cares, i've been running my car without the maf for a whole week. It runs better that way, whenever i plug the maf in, i get a real shi^^y idle and then a code 34. Also, you can smell extra fuel as the car stubles in idle. I'm not sure what to do since so many people seem to have problems with aftermarket MAF's and I won't buy one at a junkyard.

I get a code 34 occassionally. After a long time, I figured that I need to CLEAN the MAF. Turns out that oil from my K&N filter was on the MAF. The first time I cleaned the MAF, it made a noticeable difference. I had to do it again since the oil had been baked on for so long. It's ashame that my car doesn't have the burnoff relay built into the MAF circuit.
