The ticking/ knocking noise is back, it only comes when the engine is hott. Could this be something serous? It does it when the car is at like 210 then gets louder, if i let it cool down then start it, its gone. Anyone have any ideas? Shoudl i run different oil. i have 5-40 in it. Valonine max life. Thanks guys

You can most likely determine the origin of the knock by how frequent it is at idle. If the knock occurs roughly twice every second it is possibly a rod bearing. I once had an overheat happen on the hifgway and the result of it was a rod knock that came and went and finally there until the bearing spun completely and made the engine pretty much inoperable. You may be at that stage and, regret to say when that occurs, it's pretty much over for the engine, but I'm jst going by what you describe and I could be entirely wrong!

Thanks, lets hope not. But would it go from louder to queiter as the engine cooled down? Sound like the top of the motor. What should i run for oil in it? I put my han don the motor when i heard the noise but felt the same, coouldn't feel anything bad. Could my oil just be to thin? Also, why would it come and go? Only happens when its hott. I was thining it could be my lifters freezing up, no? Thanks

One word (two actually) VALVE ADJUSTMENT.
Mine did the same before the bolt incident (you don't want to know) and I have never gotten the valves right by anyone's advice, nor by any repair book. I'm in the process of doing it again with a compression gauge as per someone's recommendation (don't know who you are but thanks a lot).

I've heard both a spun rod bearing and loose hydraulic valves. Once you hear the spun bearing you will be able to tell them apart. Also, when the rod hits the crank journal, there is a NOTICEABLE collision that can be felt no matter where your hand or finger is on the engine.

Recommended oil when new is 5W-30. Older engines that have not been freshly rebuilt are recommended to have 10W-30. If you need anything thicker than this, its time for you to have your cooling system checked along with your bearing tolerances.

Engine: Pos 2.8 pulled and replaced with a 350 tpi motor converted to carb.
Transmission: 700r4, vette servo,shift kit, hayden 15"x8" trans cooler.
Yeah them valves are a pita. I spent an hour making sure mine were good when i did my head gasket. And then like a month ago they loosend up so bad the car wouldnt run right. The nuts(or the nylon washer) is bad on mine. Even now i can hear them getting looser and looser. Im not gonna mess with them again though, soon Ill be putting the 350 in. Then ill either sell, junk or see how long a 2.8 can sustain 6,000 rpm without oil
