Heat shielding?

I've ben having a problem every since I got the hedders in (more so after the cam swap). My starter is "sluggish" i guess I would say. It hesitates on the first revolution, then starts the car (like the tinming is over advanced, but it does it reguardless of where the timing is). I replaced the starter twice since the hedders wen't in, just got through doing it again today. Would you imagine it is related to the heat the hedders are throwing off? The collector is about 4 inches from the solenoid (runs parallel to the starter). The starting condition is worse when the car has been running. Sometimes it will just barely turn over...REAL slow. So I end up stranding myself or opening the hood to let it cool before restarting. It does it in the morning when the engine is cold too (or at least it did befroe today). I won't know till tommorow when I start it if the new starter is a little better. I have backed off the timing, advanced the timing, the condition remains (with this cam, the timing likes to be quite advanced). Thanks for any help

I had a similar problem when I installed my headers. i fixed it by getting a mini starter that featured no heat-soak -- and for extra measure wrapped it with a heat shield. its only 20 bucks and it cant hurt.

When i bought my motor the guy gave me a starter, he said it came from the motor,.It was wrapped in this metal blanket stuff. Supposedly a heat sheild. I dont know where you could get it but that along with v6's idea would probably help alot.
