Weird sound coming from under car

The cluctch on my A/C compressor is making a noise and I know it is going. Only happens when the A/c is on. But I have notice the same noise even when driving with the A/C off. It pretty much sounds the same as the A/C clutch chattering, but it is coming from underneath my car. It seems like its coming from the Cat Converter, but it could be coming from the tranny. Could the Cat converter make this sound if plugged of something? Or maye a noise from the engine itself but just hearing it at the cat? I am going to change it anyways with a Catco race converter since my old one is orginial. Its 50 state legal and cheaper than the stock one so... for better power and less money why not, right? Anyone why have any experience with the catco converter on a v-6? Does it bolt right in or is it shorter or longer and might need a little cutting or an piece of pipe put in? I used one on a v-8 when I was doing my custom exhaust so I dont know the answer to that with a v-6 and stock exhaust. Now with the noise has anyone heard something like that before coming from a cat converter or tranny. If it is coming from the tranny and not the cat converter It sounds like its coming from the torque converter area although I could be wrong. Could my tranny be screwed? I checked it fluid and its a brown color ... not the bright red I think it should be. Is it burnt? *** only knows when the fluid and filter has been changed. It has 120,000 miles on it and I wouldnt be surprised if its the orginial filter and fluid. I am going to change the fluid and filter and have it flushed as soon as possible. Is my tranny screwed? Will the flush and filter change extend its life a little? How many miles on average are these v-6 (700r4?) trannys good for? Before they need a replacement or rebuild? If it needs that I will drive it till it wont drive no more since the cost or that will be more than the car is probally worth. A dented up 89 firebird. Thanks for any replys!!

i have that catco on mine, direct bolt on, no problems. the noise is probably your cat rotted out and the internals are rattling around inside it.
as for the trans, yea its probably good and burnt. change the fluid and filter and get it flushed. in some rare cases, i have seen where doing that will ruin the trans, because the build up of junk was holding stuff together that was worn out. id say get it done though, its pretty rare.

Ok thanks, this helped out. I am going to get the catco converter and do the flush and fiter change. I guess I will see what happens. I know what you mean about changing the fluid and filter will ruin the trans. When I changed it on my truck 6.5 diesel 94 chevy 1/2 ton 4l80e tranny the trans discingrated a few hundred miles later and had to rebuild it. Got a good deal with a guy who only charged $300 for a complete rebuild labor and parts. Had to get the 4th planatary gear (hard part) which cost $500 on top but that was at cost. So how many miles is my 700r4 good for on average anyways before a rebuild?
