exhaust leak help...PLEASE! haha

hey yall, my car is stinkin really bad inside. When im driving it i get a wiff of exhaust in my car just about the whole time the cars moving, i think its comming through the air vents, and my motor is making some loud noise comming from the exhuast manifolds, so i am assuming its a leak at the gaskets on the manifolds. So do you htink that exhaust is leaking and its getting sucked into the air that gets blown into my car? I think i am going to replace the exhast manifolds gaskets hoping it will solve the problem. And the other question is, is how hard is it to change those gaskets? it looks like a mother effer to get to, i htink i will need a lot of penatrating oil, well if anyone has done them b4 please let me in on a lttle secret or something. THanks, Mike

Check your spare tire donut spot. If its rusted through like it is on 99% of all 3rd gens it can suck in your exhaust there.

You can put you heater contorls on max ac and it will close off your fresh air vents. That can help tell if its coming from under the hood. long as your slider is in deep red, ac should come on.

If the exhaust leak is in the middle, leaky door seals could suck up some too. I didn't have that problem but on gusty cold days the air would blow right through the car. I cheaply fixed it by putting some peel and stick home weather stripping over top of the stock stuff.

thanks, yea i noticed when i turn the AC on..the smell goes away, but right now i have just about all hte interior out of my car because im replacing stuff and im about to prime my ccar..so..why not leave it out.haha..and no..there is no rust in the floor or panels, but i do have the hatch gasket out and stuff..so i was also thinking that some might leak through there and into the car, i was just checking to see if it was possible that it could leak through the AC too..Thanks

as far as replacing the gaskets...
the bolts have a good habit of snapping off...
So, make sure that 1. the engine block is DEAD cold and 2. use LOTS of penetrating fluid. Like spray it, wait 15 minutes, spray again, wait another 15 minutes spray again, then after another 15 minutes, then start removing.

AND GO SLOW. Try not to jerk, snap or jolt the bolts... or SNNNNNNNIIIIIAAAAAPPP goes the booo-ult....

Well yea, your hatch will suck up the exhaust big time. If you have a leaky seal or its out. You never drove a hatch back or wagon with the hatch or back window open and straight pipe out the back? It will fill your car with exhaust in nothing flat.

Why you should really have the exhaust run out the side on anything with a rear window or hatch. Even a truck if you run a nice cap and rear window opens. As the worst one is when your feed a constant dose when every you drive but its not enough to get your attention all the time. It can do slow damage. Then one day you go for a 7hr drive and slowly get poisoned out.

Even worse for kids.
