Cluster swap question
V6 Camaro Question: With the new cluster in everything works except the tach but the SES light comes on and codes the VSS. This was not the case with the new engine (2.8 '87Firebird with all senders for the guages) and the old cluster so a buddy suggested I substitute the old speedo in the new cluster. He wasn't sure tho. Anybody know if this will work. Also can the tach be made to work? The donor for the cluster was a Zed so a V8, likely an LG4 (carb, no VSS) but I did not get the year (swap meet special $30). Any help or referral would be cool!
I still have the original cluster of course but with the swap the idiot lights didn't work right.

did you have to rewire teh cluster harness in the back? I had to on teh bird when I swapped in a vss cluster due to the swap.

No need to swap pins on a Camaro for a different gauge cluster. The printed circuit film on the back of the clusters is different for the idiot light cluster and the gauges cluster, harness connector pinouts are the same. I speak from experiance as I swapped from the idiot lights to a gauges cluster in my '87.
The tach runs off a signal from the distributor, and 12Volt from the battery. 12 volt on the pink/black wire, and white wire. If you have power and ground (black wire) to the tach then that tach is bad (or the printed circuit on the back of the cluster is damaged).

Searching found the same problem as another guy who put in a v8 tach. The oil pressure goes off the chart, but my tach doesn't move. The advice to him was to get a v6 tach/oil pressure guage (They are together) Hopefully I can find one of those in the wreckers easily enough. Still not sure about swapping the speedo, is the VSS in the cluster somewhere, cuz it did not pull a code with the stock cluster.
