crank removal in vehicle

does anybody know if you can remove the crank with the engine and box in the car or does the engine need to be removed its a 89 firebird with a 2.8 and auto box.I have removed the sump and inspected the bottom end it looks like its been freshened up at some point as the mains are 16 thou u/s and are badly scored due to not cleaning after machining and the big ends have been replaced but standard size and now are quite sloppy and wearing uneven.Does anybody know how far the crank can be ground as its 16 thou already and is badly scored.

Car: 1973 Datsun 240Z/ 1985 S-15 Jimmy
Engine: Turbo LX9/To be decided
Transmission: 5-speed/T-5
Axle/Gears: R200 3.90/7.5" 3.73
MUCH easier to just yank the engine, and work on it that way.

The problem with removing the crank in the car, is that the flywheel or flex plate restricts the crank from being removed easiey, due to being bolted from the tranny side to the crank.
