Magnetic and Distributor Ignition?

What's the difference between the two?

I ask this because I really don't know what the difference is, and google doesn't seem to want to give me an answer.

My car needs a new crank, and I've found two....they both have the same casting numbers, but different part numbers...one's #10610 and the other is #10620.

Descriptions read....
Fits Chevy 3.1L liter, 191ci 1989-2002 w/distributor ignition, no notches cut in center
and...
Fits Chevy 3.1L liter, 191ci 1989-2002 w/magnetic ignition, crank has notches cut in center full round counterweight
'91 Camaro RS w/3.1L 189....which do I need?...and why?

Thanks in advance...

Re: Magnetic and Distributor Ignition?

One is for use with a distributor, and the other is for use with a DIS and a crank position sensor. Your car has a distributor.

The first one is for use with a car with a distributor, like yours. That's the one you want. The other is for the 3100 I believe.

Re: Magnetic and Distributor Ignition?

Actually both cranks will work for you, since they both fit in your block. The trigger wheel just becomes useless in yur application.

If you had a FWD 3.1, then you would HAVE to use the one with the notches.

BTW that crank (the notched one) can be found in the genII 3.1, 3.4 DOHC, 3100 and 3400.
