Is this a problem? It doesn't smell like its drenched, but when you open the hood, you can lightly smell gasoline and its definitly from the smog canister.
I read, I think in a Hayne's manual, that the filter should be replaced if they smell of gas. Is this really something that matters?

Yes. Replace the filter. Purolator makes it and its availible cheap at most auto parts stores.

You should also check the purge valve to make sure that it's working correctly.

I second that question. How do I check it? And where exactly am I gonna find it? On top of the canister?
