Soon to be Owner of 89 Firebird

I've already made a deal with this guy who is looking to sell his 89 Firebird for only 900 dollars. So far, the car has about 140k miles on it, and he tells me it's in good condition cause the only problem is that he got hit around the driver side door/quarter panel, but he's got new fenders for it ready. The guy also told me he's getting about 21-23 mpg, so I'm really thinking that this might be a good find. Do you guys know any questions I should ask about, or look for when I go over and check the car out? Really don't want to buy it and find out that I've gotta spend hundreds of dollars more to get it fixed.

And yes, it's a 2.8L V6
Thinking about saving up and then buying a turbo for it later.

see if the timing chain has been replaced.check the usual stuff belts hoses, check the wiring to see if its been hacked up or repaired, hows the transmission shift.take it for a test drive listen for clunking or ratlles in the frontend.typically just check what u would when buying anycar

There is a tremendous difference between getting hit, and getting hit, so before you commit yourself, make sure there is no frame damage. If it's just body repair, and you like the way it drives, then go for it....

Re: Soon to be Owner of 89 Firebird

Just like these guys said, check it over good... I probably could have gotten a better deal if I had combed my bird over more carefully. Check for leaks, brakes, oil. Let it sit and idle for a few minutes till it warms up and pay attention to how it sounds or whatever ya know? Take it for a test drive and try to get it somewhere you can do around 40-50mph (my gf's car rode just fine at 35 but 55 was scary as hell until a gob of new front end parts).

Or if you have the money, borrow the car and take it to a shop and have them check it out (comp/leak etc.) . We are talking 18-19 years old,and even though my 89 mpfi 2.8 auto bird runs/shifts like a top and looks good to boot doesnt mean I havent already dropped hundreds of bucks, not on modifications.... Just on getting the car back in to shape and I'm still a looooong way from done.

Hope it works out and the car it good for ya,I'd sell my mother before my firebird .
