over heating

Hey guys, my v6 has been not overheating but heating up to the point the fans kick on. It does this almost everytime I drive it. The outside temp could be very mild and it will eventually heat up to that point. What gives?

I've replaced head gasket almost a year ago, didn't have them decked. I replaced the thermo and gasket and that didn't help. I have the timing, if it hasn't changed, at 12 deg. Any suggestions?

Re: over heating

I had this problem a few years ago. I changed to 180 t-stat. Same problem. It ended up being the water pump. I had to put the 195 back in by winter after the water pumkp fixed the problem. The pump cost 20 bucks and was not hard to do. I had already changed tthe pump when i bought it, so it could be that.

Re: over heating

i noticed that the pump has some salvage yard markings on it, so that could be it. I might as well change it out. Thanks,

Re: over heating

the v-6s are designed to run warmer than most.. are u talking city driving or highway driving? city driving is the hardest on a car. little to no air flow over the radiator. that is what the fan is for. most 3rd gens run 180ish-210 all the time. its not overheating untill its going to the red line. working as intended.

Re: over heating

ok, my buddys 3.1 stayed pretty even. not a concern just wondering why it would heat up even when it's cold.

Re: over heating

2.8's cooling fans are non computer controlled.. 3.1s are... is the fan set lower than factory or the temp sensor in the rear of the passenger side head bad?

Re: over heating

Everything is factory on the car. I think some of it is the timing.

Re: over heating

It's totally normal for the fans to come on, If the temp stays under 230*, don't wory, it's the way the car is designed.
