Lower Intake Swap Question?

I just bought a 1990 camaro with a 3.1l I was told the waterpump went out but when I started tearing down the motor I found that the heater hose connector was broke and it looked like someone had tried to JB weld it back in and gumed up the hole. If I'm not able to tap the hole and install a new connector I need to know what lower intakes will fit on this engine. The wrecking yard near me doesent have any 3.1 camaros so what other cars or trucks had this engine? Would a 2.8L manifold work? Would one from a transverse engine work?

Re: Lower Intake Swap Question?

The 3.1 was GM's base model V6. It was an either base package or option for a good percentage of their passenger cars in the early 90's (Cavalier, Corsica, Lumina, Celebrity, and I think Beretta). Pontiac's had them in the same body style cars (Sunbird, Grand Prix, and 6000).

Re: Lower Intake Swap Question?

only if it has iron heads.

unfortunatly though the 2.8/3.1 manifolds are the same.there is a lil bit of work needed to make a 2.8 mani fit ona 3.1 or vise versa.

2.8 manifold has a cold start injector, were the 3.1 dosent

the difference is on the 3.1 instead of a injector it has a plug in the manifold. u may be able to remove the injector and install a freeze plug in its place. but im not sure if it is infact a freeze plug or a nother special plug

Re: Lower Intake Swap Question?

Where is the cold start injector located on the manifold? Is that all that needs to be done?

Re: Lower Intake Swap Question?

its on the back of the manifold near the firewall, u cant miss it, and yup thats the only thing u need to do to put a 2.8 manifold on a 3.1

Re: Lower Intake Swap Question?

Is it on the lower, middle, or upper manifold? Does anyone sell a delete kit for the injector?

Re: Lower Intake Swap Question?

lower, from the fuel rail. you can just leave the injector in and leave it as is.

Re: Lower Intake Swap Question?

OK one more question is the 2.8 manifold taped the same size as the 3.1 under the thermostat so I can screw in a new heater hose connector if I have to replace it?

Re: Lower Intake Swap Question?

I'm 99% sure they're the same size, but they'll also be a real bitch to get the old ones out. just to warn you.

Re: Lower Intake Swap Question?

Thanks for the help everyone, today me and my dad were able to chisel the rest or the jb weld out of the hole and retap it so we could put a new fitting in. I coated the fiting with grey permatex just in case so if I'm luckly it wont leak. If anyone needs to know the thread size is 1/2"x14 NPT. I got a tap set from harbor freight for 14 dollars and the fitting from kragen for about 9 dollars. Also the water pump was bad it was frozen solid so I got a new one and hopefully tomorrow if it doesnt rain I will get this thing started.
