Re: 1986 Firebird Fan Switch

The fan switch is in the pass side head, in between the head and the lifting eye. However, if the car has air conditioning, there is a possibility that one of the pressure switches isn't working, most likely the one in the line running down the passenger's side frame rail near the air cleaner. If you disconnect either with the key on and the fan turns off, it's bad (shorted fan switch or open pressure switch).

Found fan switch back of head on passenger side and also found connection on air conditioning line. Disconnected wire and turned key on, fan still runs. Does that mean fan switch is bad....

If you disconnected the A/C switch, yes the fan will run. The switch normally connects the 2 terminals together (closed when 'off') until it is switched by the pressure in the line.

If you leave the A/C switch connected, pull the fan switch connector off, and the fan shuts down, the fan switch is grounded and is bad. If you use a piece of wire to connect the 2 terminals of the A/C switch and the fan shuts down with both it and the fan switch disconnected, the A/C switch is bad.
