Can this be done..has it?

So I wanna drain some fluid out of my 700R4 tranny cuz someone before me put too much in it,is it possible to put a tube down the tranny dipstick tube and siphon some fluid out other than dropping the pan??

Re: Can this be done..has it?

I dont see why not lol...just make sure she has sat for awhile tho...you dont want to stick a plastic tube down into a hot tranny; that might be stupid...

IMO it wouldnt hurt to just drop the pan and replace the fluid, filter and gasket(i prefer to swap to a pan with fins(or air coolant tubes) and a drain plug)...the filter and gasket are like $20 from summit...if it hasent been done in awhile you mind as well do it...i will be doing this sometime soon and also gettin a bung welded on so i can run my trans temp guage

Re: Can this be done..has it?

Was thinkin about that but the fluid is pretty red,may have been changed before I got it,didnt hook up the tv cable,it ran rough so someone added fluid to it.I mite can take off the tube at the tranny and pretty much drain all the fluid from there with a pump ,at least to the bottom of the stick and refill like it should be...

Theres a plug on the drivers side if the tranny near the shifter linkage. remove it & thread your sending unit in there. Worked for me when I put my Autometer on a couple years ago.

The oil pressure gauge is usually just a bad sending unit...not hard to change out...just unscrew the old one and screw in the new one...then plug it back it....do it fast cause you will lose oil on that one lol...and as for the trans plug, THANK YOU for pointing that out...i just did it and wow that was like meant for the temp sending unit to go there...it fits perfect...it took me like 30 mins to do (not counting having to go to the store and get more automotive wire)

Thats also the port to use when you need to know the line pressure.

IMO line press is just as important ans oil press and coolant temp if the car see's any thing other than DD duty.

I havent tried it on a car (used to run a trans dyno) but a T fitting should allow a temp and pressure unit on the same port if clearance isnt an issue.

Actualy knowing the LP is so much better than guessing by the feel of the shifts.

EDIT: Oh! and yes you can siphon the fluid from the pan I do it all the time to reduce messes when I R&R. Do your self a favor and buy a siphon tool of some sort, it's definitely worth it.

Re: Can this be done..has it?

cool,i have a primer pump for a boat that has a long tube on both ends, think i will change the oil gauge in the cluster first and go from there(less mess)..then the tach, and then the tranny sending unit...one thing at a time i guess,,,thanx!!

Re: Can this be done..has it?

When you say "it's at 3/4 all the time" do you mean with the key off and out of the car as well?

If so I'd definitely look at the guage. If it's only when the motor is running then I'd do the sender first. They are an extremly common failure and changing ons shouldnt take more than 2 minutes.

It's just when the car is running..even after it's gotten hot,any way to check it before removing the sendin unit?

there is a sending unit for the speedo. there are gears that go into an electronic unit that feeds your speedo.
take that one off and you can drain fluid from it. i went and got an aftermarket pan with a drain plug in the bottom.

but why do all that. when you go into a shop for new fluid they suck it out through the dip stick. just drain out a pint that way. much easire than getting under the car.

Re: Can this be done..has it?

Well I got it drained thru the tube using an air compressor and a gun used for sand blasting,it was darker in the open than on the stick.Got the stick to wheres theres nothin reading on it,even tho it kept coming out(it sprayed out of the gun not streamed),but it started to rain and had to quit and just have to start from scratch, put in 1 quart or 2 then check each time I add fluid,,,thanx guyz!!!

Re: Can this be done..has it?

Do you know how to check fluid level? The car has to be running and in neutral (e brake on) and in most cases hot.

If the car is not running then it will look like it's over filled and if it's in gear or sometimes park it'll look low.

Re: Can this be done..has it?

It was too much hot, runing in park on level ground..still was way above the hot mark where the stick starts to curve it's not leaking tranny fluid now that I can see...just oil, so I gotta go under it to check pan bolts today.
