i need some help,

i am going to mod my 1987 rs and need some help choosing the parts that i need, what size cams will work the best? what type of piston do i need to handle a 100+hp shot of nos? what other stuff do i need?

Well the crank and rods are forged from the factory so you should be good there...As for a cam the stock cam will be pretty good but a 260 grind would be best IIRC. how many miles do you have on the car? If there is ALOT of miles, i would suggest pulling the motor and making sure everything is tight and ready to go... u do dont NEED to run forged pistons for a 100 shot but it is recommended for longevity. You can get those over at the fiero store; they are expensive pieces tho. Remember nitrous also means hotter temperatures so you also have to do all the nessary things that come with that. I would at least do cermaic coated headers(plain will work but cermaic has better heat disapation properties) high flow cat and a full cat back exhaust. Maybe even throw in an electric cut out before the cat. Run a lower temp thermastat(160). You will also want to get more air in there or at least lest more flow so your going to want to check into the threads about gutting the bottom of your air box. If your serious about getting the most hp out of the nitrous i would also consider looking into doing some intake porting and head porting. Not much to be made hp wise there but it will help in the top end. Remember your also going to need to focus on ignition and fuel also. I personally have never ran nos on a third gen but have set up cars with it and just the other day helped my buddy finally put his 89 454 ss truck back together and we put a 175 shot on it. Like i was saying fuel and spark are huge. Different temperature plugs will be a must, maybe a stronger ignition system all together(msd or equalivant would be best)...the last noted is not necessary but would help the car be more consistent and also help control the nitrous better. You will also need to upgrade your injectors most likely. Like i said ive never done it on this car(maybe do a search in the v6 section about nitrous) Im not sure what parts exactly will need to be updated. All the above stated should help you out. Im sure i forgot something, but that should get you started.

 

Crank is nodular iron, the 3500 crank is forged

I would start with tuning before nitrous.

260 cam is NOT the best cam. I have tons of flat tapped grinds that are much better and taylored to you application

 

thanks alot, all that really helped ,but electric cut outs are too much when you can get a regular cutout for $20 instead of $500.and also in california i cant get hi flow cats because of CARB regulations... but i thought the lil 2.8 didnt have anything strong but thats nice to know that it has a forged crank already. im expecting about 345hp with the shot. should run about 13.8 at the strip on a cold day.

 

...ehhh your hp goals sound a lil high man...a basicly stock motor with a 100 shot should get your idk prolly 250 at the flywheel....say with the right cam and tune you might be able to get 280 or so at the flywheel...so count in about a 20% loss through the drivetrain. I mean a 100 shot will do wonders to your times and speed but your goals are a lil high. FirstFirebird will most likely chime in with exact numbers...he is very good at our cars. He has built some amazing cars in his past and is working on an amazing motor set up right now...i personally want to drive to flordia just to see that run and get a ride in it...its pretty much my dream motor set up


FirstFirebird...thank you for the corrections...I forgot the 260 grind is good for turbo not nitrous. My mind is been on turbo everything recently(got a ride in my buddies twin turbo supra the other day.....i know its a tuner car, ewww nasty, but OMG was that so much fun)

 

i have supporting mods on the way... i just wanted to be sure what i needed to run nos.so thats what i mean when i say 350bhp. and goals a lil high? yeah. im a cailfornia kid... were all kind of dumb over here. we all think we can do huge stuff to our cars and then find we are very wrong.we also are a bunch of ricers over here.
