Fuel pump FINALY gave out!

Yep...I've had this car for 15 years and the stock fuel pump gave out. I was at McDonald's drive thru and the car started to stumble a little. So I pulled in the parking lot and let it sit awhile while I ate my food. I turned the key and she wanted to turn over but not fire. I placed a screwdriver in one of the plug wires I pulled off and got it close to a ground to check for spark and it did. So, I had it towed home ($60) and conffered with the shop manual. Put battery to red test lead and didn't hear the pump. Switched out relays and still no dice. Placed battery voltage to grey wire on disconnected relay harness per shop manual and it still didn't prime. I don't think the 3.1 came with a fuel pump fuse, so I took out the rear seat to get to the fuel pump connector. This thing has never been disconnected in 18 years and looked as good the day it was installed. I saw 3 wires (Grey,Purple and Black). Black was ground and Grey was hot and Purple was signal to gauge. I placed voltage to the Grey and grounded the Black and NOTHING! Pretty sure it's dead. Whats the possibility of the ground wire going to the pump is broke? HIGH? I thought at least the pump would turn with some voltage going directly to it.

sounds like its a dead pump to me. I can't imagine the wire broke, but you won't know till you pull the tank and you may as well change the pump at that point anyway.

Re: Fuel pump FINALY gave out!

If you go thru with the pump change, try to get the original factory brand!...those after market pumps suck more gas and don't work too well with the original sending unit!....I wished I had more time ti research and buy the right pump ,but time was not on my side and now I have to remember to top off the fuel tank just for good measure!

Re: Fuel pump FINALY gave out!

Well the local shop that's going to put in the pump is charging me $362. That includes towing, labor, and part (local Autozone). I didn't want a pump that might last for 10 months and they say sure bring it in and you'll get a free one. They are'nt going to pay to have my tank dropped again. So I went to my NAPA dealer and got an originl Delphi fuel pump for $82 after tax. The generic pumps in town were $87 before tax. I thought it was a good deal. If my factory lasted this long, hopefully this Delphi will last as long.
