Replacing Oil Pump in a 2.8
Hi guys,
All of my valves are making a hell of alot a noise so methinks it's time for a new oil pump. I've already got a new pump and everything and was trying to find someone to help me but I'm going at it alone. I've got a couple quick q's to ask before I get started.
1. Since I don't have an engine hoist I'll be using a floor jack and some wood as my haynes manual recommends. What part of the oil pan should I jack at and what are my chances of seriously f-ing something up. The manual makes it sound like a walk in the park, but to me the oil pan doesn't look all that sturdy.
2. Will I need to prime the pump in any way and if so how? Manual says nothing about it but I heard that you need to somewhere.
3. Any tips?

Just as a heads up you might want to make sure you have a jack that will go high enough. I tried to change my oil pan, gasket, and pump and i had to obviously have the car on jacks so i could get under it lol. Well after it was up in the air my jack wouldnt go high enough with the block on it to even touch the front pulley of the motor let alone pick it up. Just a heads up you might want to check that out. I ended up taking it to my mechanic and he did it for cheap...I supplied the pan, gasket, oil, filter, and pump and he installed it all.
Hold on ill go look at the receipt to give you an idea of how cheap it can be done for to save you the hassel.....$150 was the total...ill take a pic of the invoice and post it if you want lol. It helps that im good friends with the owner cause I used to race dirt track cars with him and his family

Its an old trick. I have no clue it is the best idea but in theory it works. It acts as a lubricant during first crank and then dissolves in the oil later as it is petroleum based.

Any decent shop has a tub of Vaseline around for such projects.

Vaseline makes sense to me, alot easier than taking the entire distributor out and using a primer. BTW Gumby your notch and rear tach are awesome.
Anyway, thanks for the reminder about the jack height. I should be ok if put my stands on the spring perches, if not I've got tons of concrete blocks I can put my jack on. And to be honest I don't have $150, I know, it's pretty sad.

Vaseline is also an old painters trick, cheaper n quicker then masking off large area's. Once the paint is dry you just give it good a bath.

When using a jack and wood to raise an engine by the oil pan it is best to use the largest piece of wood that will fit well in there to spread out the load over a larger area. Also it is worth saying that it should sit under both horizontal members of the pan to prevent crushing it like a soda can.

Actually i would not recomend doing it from the oil pan. Most people on here will tell you to use the bottom pulley of the motor. You will have use a block that has a v-notch into it to obviously not roll off the pulley. Its a strong point on the motor and will yeild you enough height to get the pan off, will have to unbolt the tranny most likely and have a jack under that to lower it down while you jack up the motor tho. It might make things easier. Just my .02 cents

Id do it form the top, with a 2-3 4x4 side by side across the fenders to lift it up,[jack is up there lifting it up] yea unbolt trans and motor mounts.

Well I've started, have everything but the torque converter shroud taken off. Just need to go get some wood and I'll be off! I did a search and someone a few years ago wrote a step by step, don't know why it never got made a sticky? Any way I'm gonna lift if from the crank.
I do have one quick question. I bought clear silicone rtv by mistake. Can I use this as a gasket sealant for the oil pan or is it a bad idea?

100% clear silicone is just as good as hi temp RTV.
Don't want a leaky exhaust, 100% clear them joints, even donuts and it makes a world of difference.

Depends on how big and such.
First experience with it was on my 9sec 1/4 drag bike.
Being a 2 stroke it used expansion chamber pipes like a dirt bike.
And that means the pipes is held on with two springs on a slip fit shorty header.
Well them suckers can leak/suck air at them speeds. Which is bad on a 2stroke going fast, vaporized pistons suck.
So you use that to keep it sealed up, its didn't stand out and holds up well to heat even at a header.
but gotta be 100% clear, can get it in a caulk tube at walmart for $3
Much cheaper then $3-4 auto parts isle tiny tube.
If your using auto store slip fit exhaust stuff its great as it will glue and seal all in one, no clamps / welds needed for a clean look.

Figured I'd post an update. I've got got everything apart and the engine raised, just have to drop the pan. I had a hell of a time getting passenger side exhuast off, but everything else went smoothly. Found out why I have low oil pressure, my oil pan has dent right where the oil pump is. I'm cheap so I'm just gonna hammer the dent out with a block of wood. My oil pan gasket has also been leaking so everything but my brand new vette tranny is caked in oil. Should be done by Monday, I'll take as many pics as possible and right a step by step.

I DID IT!!!!!!!! Finally I can drive my baby, just gotta replace the o2 sensor. I took a few pics and I'll be sure to make a step by step write up.
