Whats causing this random high idle?

For a little while now I've been getting a high idle that comes and goes it'll be at 900 rpm and suddenly jump to 2000 or 1500 then after a little bit it drop's again. I've tried different IAC valve's with the same problem and adjusted the TPS. I know I have no vacuum leaks being that I replaced every one of them last year.

Also now that I have a thread going I also have a cloud of blue smoke sometimes when I start the car if it's been sitting for like a week or so without starting and when it's driven it sometimes smoke's I had my dad follow me to confirm this and it's not all the time either it couldn't possibly be the rings could it the engine only has around 28k on it I know it could be valve stem seals I pulled the pcv off with the engine running and had a little smoke coming out through the vent hole.

I had the irratic idle problem too. I fixed mine by locating a vaccuum leak. The blue smoke is more than likely valve seals. They get old and dry out. Good luck.

Re: Whats causing this random high idle?

There's a lot more things that can cause a vacuum leak besides the lines. I've had problems with the PCV valve seating in the grommet, and the PCV pipe sealing to the valve elbow AND intake nipple, the elbow for the pass side valve cover vent tube (to the bellows) leaking, and leaking valve cover gaskets. And also the gasket at the top of the TB as well. Not to mention the manifold side of the fuel injectors' o-rings. Just to show you there is more to a vacuum leak than just the lines.

:edit: And yes, our cars are prone to the SBC smoky start caused by valve stem seals hardening and cracking.

I've had that problem with the intake manifold gasket giving me a vacuum leak where it bolts to the cylinder head.

Its a vacuum leak, you just have to find it.

Good luck
