blown covergasket

today I was loosing coolant, thought it's a hose, but it's the gasket under the cover, behind the waterpump.
Do I have to take care of anything special, when I put the new gaskets in?
Is sealant (rtv) in the set I will get?
What about the o-ring for the crankshaft? do I have to change it?
etc.
thanks in advance
Horst

What kit do you mean?

What spot do you mean? Do you mean the spot where the upper rad hose meets the manifold at the water neck, where the thermostat is under? Under that water neck is a gasket.

I always use the gasket when I change thermostats- altho I'm not sure why. The book says to. RTV might work just as well, and require less scraping.

Where the water neck meets the gasket is a raised lip that helps the gasket seal. My lip is almost non-existant, due to all the gasket scraping I've done. Thus, I always have to glop on a ton of gasket sealer, and tighten the screws past torque spec. I wonder if I switched to blue RTV if I wouldn't have this problem.

The Gen II FWD 2.8 blocks got o-rings under those water necks... lucky guys.

Oh- wait- do you mean the water-pump-to-timing-chain-cover gasket? Is that the kit you mentioned? I'm not sure why you mentioned the crankshaft seal...

You have an o-ring under the water neck?! What year's your car? I'll have to grab one outta the junkyards if I see one; that gasket is a PITA.

water-pump-to-timing-chain-cover gasket, thats what it is, and there is an o-ring in front of the crankshaft, right inside the cover.
I wont to know if I have to put a new one in.

Nope, the water pump gasket doesn't affect the front crank seal. In fact yes, it is a gasket, not RTV. I always put a gasket sealant on it though... the exact brand I use is the Permatex Hi-Tack "red" brush-on can.

Be careful scraping the old gasket off; the timing chain cover is aluminum, and you can gouge cuts into it very easily. Too many gouges = bad sealing to gasket. (That's why I use gasket sealer, hehe...)
