My V6...finally

Hey folks, I have a 3.1l V6 Firebird, 1992. This is my baby. I totalled a previous car, and with the setlement money, my girlfriend bought this baby for me for a grand. The previous owner had hit a deer, and wanted to get rid of it, so i took it upon myself to start restoring it.

I finally got the spark plugs and wires replace, as well as a new hood and front bumper. Now I'm just down to the small stuff, and I was hoping you all could help me out a bit.

First off, my hood won't latch. The bar at the front of the hood that the release mechanism latches onto, just won't reach. is this a problem with a spring or what? I'll get pics up shortly

The second major problem I'm having is my turn signals. There is a small piece of metal that hooks to the turn signal/wiper arm and screws into the cancelling cam. Mine broke somehow. Hawks was of no use to me, they wanted me to buy a whole new steering column for 200. If anyone can help me find this, part, I would be eternally greatful. None of the junkyards around here have allowed me to pull the part, seeing as how they want to sell the entire column itself. If anyone can pull one or has an extra, I'll pay any reasonable offer.

After that, all I have to worry about are the trunk struts, the power lock actuators, the passenger side outside door lock assembly(doesn't work at all), and the passenger side window motor.

If anyone has tips for any of these, or if I posted this in the wrong area, sorry. I just wanted to keep a record for myself and any others who are going through what I'm going through. Feel free to post your questions that go along with whatever i have.

Thanks!
Mike

On most GMs the hood latch is bolted on the radiator support, there should be some ajustability there. Loosen the bolts & move the latch up alittle.
As far as your column problem I guess you'll need to check the dealer, they should have an exploded view of the column & get the part #. Or go to a self serve junkyard.

I haven't been able to find a dealer that would have any books on these models, or any model of pontiac for that matter. And I've noticed that the latch has some play in moveability, but I believe the spring is too long or has too much tension. I guess I'll have to go buy a new latch to try and get it working.

And since I can't drive this car, I have no way of reaching the only self service junkyard, which is 30 minutes away by car via the interstate. Looks like it'll be a nice long walk when I get the chance.

Try classic industries, and young's f-body, can also try summitracing and ebay, I doubt summit would have it though, they generally only carry big ticket items for our cars that get replaced or modified often.

Re: My V6...finally

here are the pics. first is the part i need. the pin inserts into the turn lever assembly and the hole is where you screw it into the cancelling came. I'll buy one for $10 plus shipping if someone can get me one

and the rest are my baby<3 if anyone can tell me if the gap between the hood and bumper is normal, that'd be awesome. doesn't look good IMO

edit: will have to post later, won't let me upload them and I gotta get goin to an interview

Re: My V6...finally

ALrighty, took it out for a little bit today, drove about 10-15 miles.

Everythings great, it kinda has a wobbley feeling and a squeaking noise, like rubbing rubber together, coming from the drivers side front wheel. It starts up from 0mph just fine, but cruising about 20, you hear the squeak, unless I'm slowing down. Any ideas to fix this?

And here are the pics =D
Pretty ugly, I know...

And does anyone know how to get rid of that ugly gap between the hood and bumper?

Thanks!
Mike

Re: My V6...finally

That gap really isn't that bad, older cars generally have larger body panel gaps, its not a lexus...You probably only even notice it because the nose is yellow and the rest of the car is white, it probably wouldn't bug you otherwise.

Re: My V6...finally

good point! haha i wasn't sure how bad it was, but I'm OCD when it comes to these things. I'm dying at the fact that the car is sooooo many colors.

So new questions, since most of the old ones have been answered...

If I'm going anywhere about 50mph, and I have to decelerate quickly, the whole car shakes when i hit the brakes. I have to do it slowly and gradually, or have an iron grip and hold the car straight. any ideas as to what causes this? I would believe a warped rotor

Re: My V6...finally

The braking issue is likely a bad tie-rod end.

Bad tie rod end? Alrighty, I'll take a look. Don't they have innner and outer parts? And I've also read that it could be bad rotors, cause this car did sit for quite a while.
