Umm...weirdness in wiring....

OK, get this, I rewired every connection I've ever done (that's a few years of hack job wiring before I got good at it), and what do I find? My 6-disc changer didn't have a ground. It worked, but I swear was not connected to a ground/negative in any way. Could this have caused some weird draw?

There is a slim chance that it would cause a small draw but probably not. I learned how to install stereos the same way. If you had it bolted down to the floor or some thing metal, that would probably grounded it! Just some things I have learned..

that's the kicker: it wasn't near anything metal. the FM modulator was sitting on top of my CD player, which is housed in a plastic adapter. Not bolted to anyhting metal. Nowhere near anyhting metal. The actual unit is screwed up to the bottom of my sub box, which is wood, and just wedged into place. Good thinking otherwise. After all the rewiring, it seems to be starting and running fine, been using it most of the evening. the test will be going to start it tomorrow, to see if it held the charge overnight.

Was it supposed to be grounded? It might've gotten it's ground from the radio...?

Nope, it's only connection to the radio is at the antenna, which may or my not be a ground?

The power for the changer had an ignition, a backup, and a ground. I put the ignition and backup together on a full time 12 volt, and put the ground on what I thought was a ground. I wired it up to the little extension I wired in for my CB back when I first got the 'bird. Somehow, the wiring for the CB came loose, cause the 12 volt was still attached further down the line, but the ground was just free floating. Definately weird that it worked at all. Oh well. I'm just on the way now to see if it held the charge overnight. Wish me luck!

Er, I meant that the changer got it's ground from the controller, I assumed you used a radio to control it. But now that you mention it, yes, the antenna is also a ground. I remember wiring up a Sparkomatic tape player in my dad's '76 Ford; that car used the antenna as it's ground wire. (Factory radio was grounded thru a ground strap.)
