Camaro '92 V6 3.1L Temp. Question
I have a 1992 Camaro with the 3.1L V6, is there a way other then changing the PROM to make the main Cooling Fan to cut in earlier then the 230 degrees F. that GM has set. I live in Houston, TX so we have 95 degree heat in the summer time. The car NEVER over heats but the cooler it runs the more horse power and smoother it runs.
Put in a fan switch and you can turn it on when you want... Also Jet and Hypertech sell kits that will turn it on automatically I think at 180.....
My fan is rigged to the ignition wire.. It comes on as soon as the key goes in and it gets power....

But aren't Jet and Hypertech Chips/PROM? I want to keep all that stuff stock because I've had ECM problems before? Do you know of somebody who makes a sensor that would screw into the stock hole in the block and act like a switch temp for a fan relay but also still send a temp reading to the ECM? That way you could by pass the ECM's 230F? I will look in my factory manual, but I think there is a second heat sensor for the temp. gauge, does anybody make a sensor/product to fit that hole to do the same thing? I don't understand why the hell the ECM has A) be set at 230F and only run till 220F, B) why it has to make the choice and not just have a simple heat switch that activates the fan relay.

Here try this link. I installed the Derale relay, it works very good.

I see this:
Hypertech makes a fan switch (Part No. 4028).
Features:
Replaces factory switch.
Fan turn-on at 200°, off at 185°.
I think this is what I want. So your saying that the fan switch is seperate from the central ECM, the ECM still gets a signal on what the temp is but this aftermarket replaces the stock fan switch? I see that on the Hypertech web site that they have them for the V8 305 '92 but will that work in the V6 '92? I'm going to have to study the factory manual wiring digrams a lot before I buy, but this is the idea I want, anybody can chop up and cut all the wiring and wire up your own setup, but I like the idea of a kit which just plugs into the stock plugs, makes everything neat.

Another thing that yu can do is install a 160 degree thermo from your local auto parts store. I have a '92 3.1 V6 and the 160 from a 305 fits nice and snug... You do have to seal it with RTV but hey thats a slim price t pay right?... My car does not see above 190 right now unless I am sitting idle...
THE THERMO DOES FIT TRUST ME IT DOES!!!!!! It will slide into the recesses and the "thick" part of the thermo will fit in the housing, the only thing is that the new thermo does not have the rubber gasket ring on the out side. Thats where the RTV comes in...
