A/C Compressors and horsepower

Is it normal for just switching on the compressor to cause a car to feel like it's lost 2 cyls? I mean, a minor loss I could understand, but my poor car just *hates* running the A/C.. and being in AZ this is becoming a pain.

2.8l MPFI/700r4 /w special 2nd gear delete option
In search of new v8 engine & transmission, now contemplating t5 swap to get me out of this mess.
Misc Mods: Cut air box, '83 Firebird spoiler.
Performance Parts: MSD coil, Accel 8mm wires, SplitFire plugs, Gabriel hijackers.
Audio Mods: Pioneer DEH-P3000, two 12" Optimus Pro Audio subs in hand-made enclosure each powered by a 260 watt Optimus amp. Working on shaving the box for weight.

Long..long ago, when my a/c was charged, it did feel like I was driving a Geo (gutless). So needless to say I didnt use the a/c much. Even in the scorching heat here in AZ.

Could the pressure of the charge affect how much power is robbed? Were compressors changed between 2.8 and 3.1? Were charge specs changed? What would the effects of having a lb or two of R140 bled off be besides decreased cooling efficiency?

well I guess the charge pressure could affect it...It will translate to the compressor having to work harder to spin I quess. I would imagine that the higher cherges was on the 3.1....
