leaking heavy amounts of oil

ok, so i notice puddles of oil from under my car when i drive off or come home and see where my car is parked, i noticed it was coming from the back of the car which is not good from any angle u look at it, after i crawled up under it today i noticed it was the cover on the differential, there is about a 3/4 inch clean crack/slit in it that the oil is leakin out of, it looks like something on the inside did it because the dent is bowed out, not in. What should i do, i put some high temp. silicone sealant on it for now till i find out what to do with it. If it has to be replaced what is the best route.

Find a welder that will repair it.
Ask around for references.
Cost will be about an hours labor ($45-70)

so would it be a good idea to just have it welded shut or would it be a better idea to replace the plate. I dont know if anything is wrong with it since like i said the dent looks like it came from the inside since its pointing out, does anybody have an insight as to what may have caused this? If i do end up replacing it what would be a good combination for the back, i think i have 3.23's in the back is that the best for our cars? but i'm pretty sure i dont have posi.

If car still moves, who knows what happened.
If the car is dead in its tracks, go get any rear for cheap ya can.
I have 3:42 in my rear axle. It's great.
