the cheapest place I can find to do the job wants $800 ($500 for parts, $300 for labor) to replace both the fuel pump and the sensor. I have never done anything this big before and was wondering how easy to do it.

It's a straight R&R job so I'd say it's not bad. It is a giant pain. You have to drop the rear axle, exhaust (I think), the tank, and then you can remove the punp. Plan on the weekend if you've never done anything like it.

 

Yeah, I've heard all that bad stuff about it too. But I say go for it with a haynes or chiltons and whenever you run into problems, LOTS of guys on here can help you out, fast. The people on the v6 board are probably the coolest about helping people.

I just had my fuel pump replaced.I paid $120 for the pump and $150 for the labor at a small repair shop.I used to go to Pep Boys but they always overcharge and it takes them alot longer to do it.

 

ok thats around what ill pay for a new pump but what about the sensor? is that hard to replace fo me to do or should I get a professional?

 

What sensor? Do you mean the fuel level sensor? That "holds" the pump in the tank... and GM wants about $300 for it. Supposedly, the level sensors wear out because GM used a stainless steel wire, and the "wiper" arm wears out the SS wire. GM moved to carbon fiber wires to fix the problem.

But yeah, it's not hard, just a big pain in the butt. Make sure you can raise the back of the car high enough. Both times I replaced my pump, I raised my car outside. The back was reaaally high; I left the front on the ground.

I followed the Haynes manual both times for the procedure; it covers it well. Hint- replace all the low pressure hoses back there with regular 'ol fuel line (doesn't need to be spec'd for a fuel injected system since they're low pressure). The three hoses are for the fuel return line, tank vent, and charcoal "fumes" canister. A replacement high-pressure fuel feed hose is available thru GM, but as special order, and takes "at least a week" to come in.
