ECM question
I just bought a 90 camaro rs with the 3.1 V6. It has an ecm from a 92 firebird with the same engine. Will I have problems? The car runs pretty good right now, but I'm wondering if it will run better with the correct ecm. Thanks.

Re: ECM question
It's the same ECM... Different program on the MEMCAL (if you didn't swap the MEMCAL like you're supposed to :nono: ), but the same stuff.

Re: ECM question
I bought the car like that. So how do I go about making it right? If I bought an ECM from an autoparts store, will that be enough? Thanks!

Re: ECM question
90-92 cars have the same engine and the same ECM driving it (speed density/MAP 1227730). Most of the difference is in the tables on the MEMCAL, which your parts store isn't going to have. If you're currently running a 92 MEMCAL, leave it. It's been updated over the stock 90 one. If you're having problems, pull the codes and post them up. I'd avoid the parts store ECMs like the plague. They're supposedly rebuilt, but I'd take a guess that some kind of monkeys rebuild them or something as most of them still have problems when you get them out of the box. I'd get one from a junkyard, burned-up wreck before I'd get one from NAPA or somewhere.
Also, J-bodies and N-bodies also use the 1227730 in the 2.8 and 3.1 versions.

Re: ECM question
Oh ok thanks for the heads up on that. The service engine soon light is on and I haven't had the chance to read up on how to pull the codes yet. The PO said the reason the light is on is because there are holes in the exhaust by the O2 sensor...I'm not sure how true that is the only type of fuel injection I've messed with is on a 6.2L chevy diesel.
The issues we have with the car is the radiator fan isn't coming on and the car is slow....my 85 4x4 diesel burb with 35" tires has more get up and go. The odometer does have 185K miles on it so I'm thinking that's part of why the car is kinda sluggish. I wired in a flexalite fan controller for now and I'm going to check out the exhaust tomorrow. The car sounds like the exhaust needs some work.
