Coolant fan !

My coolant fan starts at around 220 degrees F on my Camaro 91 3.1L
How can I make it start either at lower temperature or even from the start ?

Do I need to change the thermostat sensor or something else ?

Re: Coolant fan !

Replace the coolant temp sender with one with a lower temp setting... or you can buy adjustable senders so you can set it at whatever you want.

The fan in your '91 is ECM controlled. Can either change it in the ECM (burn a PROM with it lowered), or add in an external switch. The added in switch would be in parallel with the ECM, so either will turn the fan on. Needs to be this way so that the fan comes on when the A/C is on.

Re: Coolant fan !

My A/C has not been working for more than 12 years

What is (burn a PROM with it lowered) ? and how to do it ?

Wouldn't it work if I just change the temperature sensor to a lower degree ?

Re: Coolant fan !

You can't change the CTS to a lower degree... It doesn't work that way. The ECM is in direct control of the fan relay whether or not the car has A/C and/or it works. You can add a wire and second relay and knock out a plug in the passenger's side cylinder head (by the lifting eye) to turn the fan on at a lower temp, or add a switch that passes through the radiator for the same effect. Unless you want to modify the stock ECM calibration (same thing as RBob said above).

Re: Coolant fan !

yank the AC rad out, it will drasticly change your cooling for the better. [after 12 years its empty, but just go slow when you crack the lines lose]
the fan will barley need to run, long as your air dam is good.

Re: Coolant fan !

By calibrating you mean to say get a "computer" and change the settings. How much does the computer cost ?
Can I connect wires from the fan connection w/ a switch and run the fan continously with it ? In rush hours it seems a bit lame to use a switch to turn on the fan everytime the temp rises

What do you guys prefer ? Does anyone of you have done this ?
