Starting Issues

1992 Firebird, V-6. Here is what it is doing:

I go out to start it, sometimes it starts, sometimes it does NOT start. When it does NOT start, here is what it is doing: I turn the key, nothing happens. All the dash lights come on, everything looks normal. When I turn the switch all the way to crank it, nothing. It does not pull any amps, the lights do not dim, nothing.

I replaced the starter. Still the same. I hooked a heavy gage wire from the small solenoid connection on the starter to a remote switch and hooked it to the positive battery terminal to see if that would over ride a short somewhere and waited until the next time it wouldnt start. Well, this morning was that time. Turned the key all the way, nothing. So I turn the key to where all the dash lights come on and hit the switch that was wired to the small screw on the solenoid. It cranked over just like normal, but would not start. Didnt even attempt to run, just cranked.

An hour later, I went in and turned the key, started right up.

Where do I start? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Starting Issues

Could be the ignition switch itself, not the key part at the top of the column. There is an ignition switch mounted on the column down towards the floor. If you don't have a service manual now might be a good time to get one.
