How to tell if my 2.8 v6 is numbers matching.

I just purchased a 1988 Camaro with the 2.8 liter v6 for a father/ son project with my dad. After doing some work we are removing the engine so we can tear it down and rebuild it. I want to put a 350 in it but from what I read on here it not the easiest thing to do. Still, if the v6 is junk ( it needs a good bit of work, blown head gasket, etc) I would consider putting a v8 in it. If I do so I would like to keep the v6 if it is the original motor to the car. I want to know where to look on the block and car for numbers. I found the engine ID but I'm not sure on how to cross reference it to the vin. This is my first car so I'm not too sure on how this all works.

Are we sure that's the right engine picture ?

The starter on the driver's side and the oil filter being way forward instead of toward the back makes it look like a different engine ? (I've only ever seen the starter on the passenger's side in our car's V6 engines)

On my 2.8 the partial vin was found stamped into the pad right above the engine mount "clamshell" in this picture (right between the two frontmost cylinders on the passenger's side)
