Putting a turbo on my stock V6

Hi, I have a stock 2.8L MPFI V6 in my 1986 Camaro. I have been reading through multiple posts to help gather information in regards to parts. But the main reason I am posting this is to confirm I am choosing the right parts. As well as wondering if at low boost like 4psi do i need to change my fuel injectors. If i need bigger injectors no matter how much boost then I'll change up my wastegate for more boost like a 6psi or 8psi.

Turbo GT3582: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/142048704999
38MM 4psi wastegate: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/182576597236
HKS BOV: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/261620321301
Boost Gauge: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/292128335904
Wideband O2 sensor: ??

I am also wondering if I need a boost controller I saw in other posts that they had one but I am unsure if you need one. And I didn't put an intercooler as for right now i have a smaller budget and will add it next year. But if it's a requirement then that may change.
All the piping will have to be done by an exhaust shop as I don't have a welder nor am I experienced with using one. With this added I am wondering about how much it will cost.
Thanks for your help in advance.
(I live in Canada if that changes anything)

Oh my , are you gonna hate to hear this .......

Please do a search and read up on how the 2.8 had a major revamp for 1987 due to 1986 and previous having had a weak crankshaft . This info can be found either here or at the "60degreeV6" forum dedicated to these GM V6 engines . What you'll find is that your 1986 2.8 is about the worst candidate to hang a turbo on and that starting with a later year engine , even up to getting a 3.1 or a 3.4 , will be the thing that all the turbocharging experts here will tell you to do .

Re: Putting a turbo on my stock V6

Ok I'll probably end up engine swapping the motor next year after trying to find a nice replacement. I'll probably end up looking for a 3.4l.
Thanks for the information.

The 2.8 got the crankshaft with the bigger journals in 85, when it went to MPFI. 82-84 had the smaller journals.

But yes, a 3.4 is probably a better starting candidate for a turbo.

Thank You Dave , I knew there was a major crankshaft revamp for the 2.8 but I was obviously a couple of years off with the timeline .

Re: Putting a turbo on my stock V6

The engines a good one to turbo. A gt3582r may be a little big but depends on what you want. Is it a pure street car? Back in the day before inwent all wild, I did a nice low cost turbo set up for about 900 bucks. That covered everything including tuning stuff. It went 13.31@104mph as a best on about 16psi of boost.

so depending on what your end goals are it's dang easy to make a 2.8 3.1 or 3.1 pretty fast.

I know you can weld but it's really going to cut into your budget if you pay for that to be done. A harbor freight welder cost about 100 bucks or 150 for a wire welder non gas one. Thats what I got back in the day to build my first set of headers. I had little to nonwelding experience back then. It didn't look pretty but held boost and worked perfect.

Yeah this car will be a pure street car. I tried looking through your guide but the pictures won't load/ work. A cheap mig welder here is about $250 then I'll have to get a helmet and gloves. And as long as this motor can handle boost then I'll try to keep it as long as possible. The only thing I wish was different was that it could be manual. Not sure how the auto will handle the boost. If you could recommend me some parts from your cheap build that would help a ton.

Not sure where you are in ontario, but I will have all my tuning equipment for sale here soon along with my 3.1l longblock. I sold the turbo kit, but I will have a few odds and ends left over.

The auto will handle the boost better. And for the amount you plan to have.. mabey 250hp or so at most, it will work just fine. Mabey upgrade to a higher stall converter such as a AutoZone special. High stall s10 converter. Cost is 120 bucks give or take and drastically helps spool up and overall pep off the line.

Should I keep the GT3582 or should I go down to something like a T3/T4 turbo. And do I need an intercooler right away or can it wait. What size fuel injectors would you recommend. And I don't need the stall converter right away as I would have no idea how to install this.

Re: Putting a turbo on my stock V6

I was wondering if I should use:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/170717412795
This Turbo plus internal wastegate or this turbo
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/110768842608
with this wastegate
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/230989803766

I am looking to run 8psi and later increase it to the limit of the maf sensor.
I will use this intercooler:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/263110617723

Do I need to install afpr if i want to run a 19# injector. ( What # of injector would i need a afpr for.)

I would definitely run a wastegate that is external from the Turbo. Also that 2nd Turbo you link is the same one that I originally ran it is way too small. It will spool up very fast but you will not gain the horsepower you want and will be limited very quickly. I would look for at-least 28 pounds injectors. I would contact South Bay injectors . They will sell them quite reasonably priced and you get a discount for being a member here. If you run the larger injectors you do not need to change your fuel pressure regulator.

Also i have an equivalent wastegate I that I would sell you it's a Godspeed one cost a little over a $100 new I would sell it to you for 50 bucks shipped to your door comes with a 5 and 10 psi spring. It's a better quality gate imo.

After work I will try and look up some turbos for you in that price range that are a better size. Something in the 56 to 60 mm inducer size of the about perfect for what you're doing . That one that you linked without a wastegate only as a 50 mm induce is too small and will run out of steam quickly

I do have some very high quality waste gates and blow-off valves for sale but they are turbosmart the wastegate alone cost well over $250 lol

Thanks for all your help. I contacted southbay looking for 28lb or larger injectors. I also would like to purchase your wastegate for 50. I am also going to get my o2 sensor from a place you recommend it your turbo guide 14point7. The only I am unsure about is my maf sensor as to how much boost I can throw at it. And tuning the ecm.
Thankfully I don't need a afpr to help with the budget

I'll take a pic of the Westgate tonight and send it to ya. It's a solid gate and has multiple springs.

yes the slc-diy2 is a amazing wideband by 14point7.com. I still have mine 6 years later and it works awsome.

I never ran maf but iirc you can run about 4 or 5psi before you really need to start tuning the fueling. And I have no idea how much total boost you can toss before it won't register anymore. Sorry hopefully a maf tuner will chime in.

Unfortunately I can't get the slc-dyi2 but I'll get the closest thing to it being the slc-free variant B. And thanks for your help. An eBay intercooler should be fine right my friend told me they could be bad but I think this: http://m.ebay.com/itm/Universal-High...%257Ciid%253A1 should be fine

I've always used eBay equivalent intercoolers and I never had issues. That one you use linked is fine. I would sytrongly recommend using a intercooler even at low boost levels(under 8 psi).

And crap i forgot to take a pic of the Wastgate. I will tonight. Here is a link for it and a pic of what it looks like.

Something in the area of this would work quite well for your goals. I would aim at a 54-60mm turbo for the inducer size.

I'm sure theree is better priced ones out there.

GT3037 is more expensive than the GT3582. In my case is it worth it to spend the extra and get the 3037. I'm new to everything turbo so why would it be better as the GT3582 has larger compressor and the GT3037 has a larger turbine. Thanks in advance.

Honestly the gt3582r is a amazing turbo and I would suggest it for a 2.8-3.4l v6 9 out of 10 times. So if the cost is better for that one I would go for that. The only reson i recommended the gt30 is because it would spool up a bit faster and for your goals the gt35 would be slightly large. But in saying that the gt3582r is fine as well. I presonally ran one for about 3 years and joanathen on here also ran one with his 3.1 turbo set up for about 2 years.

So I would buy this one of you want one. The ar is good for fast spool up.
If you look arround and find a lower price one that's fine, but look for one that has a .63 AR size for the turbine.

As long as there wouldn't be too much lag I would go with the GT3582 as it would be more futureproof. As depending on how it goes I may do some more work to the car to make more power. But the difference between the turbos is nothing it's like $10. Once again if you believe I should get the GT3037 over the GT3582 then I would go with GT3037 as I don't have much knowledge.

Side note I'm getting Bosch iii from Southbay these should be fine, correct?

Can't go wrong with a gt3582r. I can name at least 3 of us here on this v6 board that have used them at one point. And it was a very good decision.

Just make sure you get one that has a .63 a/r on the hot side and you will have no issue spoiling up pretty fast.

The turbo I linked has a .63 a/r on th3 turbine, hot side.

I have a nice inter cooler is sell ya if you need one. I would strongly suggest running a intercooler no matter what. They sell kits on eBay for anywhere from any 100 to 200 bucks. They come with the inter cooler all the couplings you'll ever need and assorted piping.

That turbo likes 12-15psi as a sweet spot but running lower is Ok as well. Back when I first did the hybrid swap, myt first pass with the gt3582 was a 12.25@110mph. I was only running 8psi of boost.

I would think even in your stock form, you can be in the 300 350hp range pretty easy even with iron heads. My guess is Jonathan's 3.1 turbo set up probly would have run low 13s and it was pushing a good 300hp+ and the tq was even greater. Tq is where the turbo set up shines.

As long as the stock engine can handle around that boost that would be perfect. I'll send you a PM regarding the Wastegate and Intercooler Thanks.
What would I need to tune the engine properly? (Chip, possibly change the MAF sensor, new ecu, I'm completely unsure what I will need)

sorry for the late response. I pmed you back. You could run say 4 5 6 psi max with a maf set up but still i wouldnt do it i would tune it. I know a good friend who has a chip burner some chips, and a aldl cable you can use to tune the car. You'd just need to download tuner pro rt which is free, and use a laptop to datalog and tune. I would run rt42ts a.c. Delco plugs gapped to .030. They are the best spark plugs and only about 2 bucks a pop.

you are using what ecm again? I sure wish you had a 3.1l car with a 7730 ecm....lol

Re: Putting a turbo on my stock V6

For the exhaust piping is it alright if i use flux core weld or gasless welding. Just purchased a welder and I am unsure if the gas less will do.

Re: Putting a turbo on my stock V6

Flux core will work just fine. It is advantageous if you're not an experienced welder as it is easier to get a better weld with. It deposits the filler metal at a higher rate than gas shielded welding and the material you're welding doesn't need to be as clean either. As long as you're getting good penetration into your piping, you'll be fine.

In flux is fine. Actually I used a harbor freight in flux welder about 5 years ago when I first made my first set of forward facing full tube headers. Worked perfect.

Re: Putting a turbo on my stock V6

I have a question about the tuning if i should try to tune the 1227302 ecm on my car or swap it to either a 1227730 ecm or swap it to a MS
