fuel injectors ticking ????

Well I just got done changing 7 vacumn hoses on my car .I have not driven it yet , but it seems to idle a little bit better .I've been hearing this ticking which sounded like an exhaust leak for a couple of weeks now .Well I finally found what the ticking is with my stethascope .I think its the fuel injectors . ? Can the injectors be seen through the holes (gaps) on he plenum . I stuck my stethascope through one of the gaps and put the end on what looked like an injector or the top of one and found the ticking .I CAN'T BELIVE I've finallly found the ticking !!! I've been looking for it for a couple of weeks now !!!!! But , is this the injector , or injectors ticking ?

You may be hearing the one open/close. But they don't "tick" persay, at least I have never heard them tick. Now you may be hearing a small arc to ground from one of the injector harnesses.

But to answer one of your questions you can see the body of the injector on the other side that you were looking. IE standing on drivers side you should be able to see 2 of the passenger side ones & vise versa. Depending on the thickness of the stehoscope you could be able to get the same side injectors...

Thanx Hunter ! ...If one of the injector wires is arcing if I tape it with electrical tape will that make it stop ticking ? .....At first this ticking was just on one side of the motor .Today was the first day I started hearing it on both sides .But it seems like its worse on the drivers side , but it started on the passenger side and can still be heard on the passengers side also .

Well I shoulda asked this before.. But anyway

Is it running kinda funny, kinda like stutering? a light hesitation? thats intermitant? if its doing that then its arcing off.

And yes E tape (electrical) will fix.

It will be easiest to take the upper intake off to get to the injector harness. Look for bare wires at the plug. If theres even a slight shine tape it. TAPE EACH WIRE INDIVIDUALLY not in a group. If You tape in a group the wire may arc to another wire.

And hey thats what I'm here for right?! :lala:

Never heard them tick?? You obviously haven't heard many injectors. If you put your finger on one you can FEEL them tick.

No actually I have dealt with many an injector. I have heard some noisey ones but they were close to 18 years old. I have never heard a Multec type injector make any noise unless it was getting ready to fail. His car is continuing to run and I can distinguish between an arc and a very weak tap. And you do not "feel" them tic you feel them open and close. If the tolerances are out too far then it colides internally. NOT a good thing.

I work with injectors alot a work flowing and matching up sets for motors. They tick when they open and close, they sound like a wind up toy.But I use to hear a ticking noise from the inside of my Camaro, I had a cracked head on my 1 cylinder spark plug. The crack went all the way up the threads any would make a ticking noise when ever it fired.Hopefully you dont have a cracked head.

fella,fellas,fellas-here please allow me to let you all in on some tech. trivia-injectors are made to function "pulse" by our ecms via a circuit that grounds the circuit each time the injector(s) is called upon to do its duty. on the other end of the circuit is 12v switched current.if you were ever to hear a inj.power wire "arcing" to ground-which you never will-it might be heard once, then the ecm fuse(s) go byebye or it just takes out the power transistors whose duty it is to switch the current on and off thru ground as required. what you guys are listening to is the injector working. inside it is a pintle moving up and down in a magnetic field created by the 12v in and the ecm on the ground side. now there may be a ticking noise but it aint the injector wires arcing. hope i helped out

Jesus H. Christ, Pyle. Yes you "feel" them tick because the opening and closing CREATES a ticking sound/ pulsing feel.

I heard that ticking sound on my firebird. But its only when the engines cold so Im pretty sure its a oil pressure leak, or some sort of vacuum leak but Im not really to worried about it right now but if someone could confirm it to be a oil pressure leak I'd be grateful. Thanks

My1997 3.1 lumina injectors do tick especially when cold . I took it to the chevrolet dealership because I wanted to make sure there wasnt a problem. The ASE CERTIFIED general motors technician told me it was the injectors ,and it was very common in the 3.1 MPFI . A couple months later my in-laws bought a 3.1 lumina that was a year newer than mine , and sure enough it had the same ticking noise.
Bottom line:injectors do tick.

BTW my firebird ticks also just not as loud.

nah-you can check that oil yourself-any old boy can do this test if the need arises-first step consists of driving the vehicle until the light comes on or the gauge confirms zero oil pressure, the second (most important) step requires you to verify that the indicators are functioning as intended-continue driving with a slightly heavy foot for -this is critical-at least 10 miles. somewhere along the way while performing the 2nd step your oil pressure leak diagnosis will be completed. hope that i can help. really

My 2.8s tick but I usually can't hear it over the sound of the engine. The injectors on the family Buick 3.3L are really loud when cold.

It is normal for solenoids/relays/injectors to make a little noise.

LOL! This has got to be the funniest message thread yet. Injectors tick/click/whatever; they're not silent.

I have a set in my basement; they're not hooked up, so they're not ticking. Maybe if I carry them in the back seat, I'll get more performance...?

Backseat ? Id put them on the drivers seat ! Ya might run in the 12s then ! .....Im not too concerned about the injectors anymore .They sound like they are ok to me besides needing a good cleaning .Yeah , I know tom , send them to rich lol . Actually I think they are beyond cleaning cus I think they leaking .BUT I have bigger probs now . My torque converter is shaking again . Im in the process of buying one now .I had to cancel one this morning I ordered on jegs lastnight b/c it was a 12 inch and I need a 10 .Im looking for something that is only 300-600 over the stall I have now , a 10 inch one . 30 spline ....Something else I just thought about should I get a lock up or non lockup ? ??

Alot of times I think you are full of BS . I have seen you make many inaccurate technical posts.
