real quick six
real quick six
my neighbor just got an 86 firebird with a 2.8. no info really on the car, looks like a dynomax muffler, 2.5" exhaust up to a high flow cat an then to stock manifolds. no turbo, supercharger, nitrous, or any real power adders. stock rear. possibly ported and maybe even stroked. it ran a 0-60 run in just under 6 seconds by my watch. beyond that, it pinned me into my seat and pulled hard to 80. and its an auto. probably a shift kit, possibly deeper gears, but i was surprised. it seemed almost as quick as my old tpi305. i was impressed. hes selling it for about a grand, needs p[aint and interior. the body looks pretty dang straight, and the interior is only really seats need work. but any ideas why it felt so fast? it just seemed to pull really well for a six. ive never driven a six before, but it seemed well faster than it should be.
I don't want so sound rude , or flame you man .But , it prabably does not run 0-60 under 6 secs .People get funny times with stop watches .And cars always feel faster than they really are .But , yeah there's not a doubt in my mind about you saying it pulls hard .2.8s aren't bad with some work done to em .I know if I timed mine with a stopwatch ID get a number like that when its not true .There is other members on here to that have time'd with stop watches , you just don't get acurate readings .And 2.8s can be just as quick , sometimes faster than 305s , yeah thats right ! I know your thinking
, BUT if the 305 is in bad need of tune-up and the 2.8 has a fresh tune-up with ignition rebuild , its pretty peppy .

IF the guy is in San Fernando Valley, give a shout, I'll tell ya if he slipped in a 3.4.
Heck $1k for a V-6 is too much, tho.
Especially if it needs paint & interior.
I paid $300 for my 85.
AND I know of folks whom have paid $300 for a V-8 car, too!

my 305 wasnt that slow, tpi and ran mid15's, but this car felt damn quick, specially for a six. and wayne, i know about the stopwatch trickin people but its his car, not mine, if i could id take it to the track. anywhere from a 5.9 to maybe a 6.5 is the room for error i suppose. as for feels fast, id just ridden in his nova, and it IS fast, high 11's, so i know it wasnt just a not used to it thing. as for a 2.8 being faster than a 5.0, i know, but not usually n/a, usually its forced or crutches on the bottle to do it. i dont know if it was a 3.4, but it seemed wayyy faster than a six should. im guessin the compression was up or heavily ported intake or somethin, but it just seemed way quick. maybe im wrong, but it just didnt seem like a six except in one area. no torque, but a helluva top end. i agree about the grand being high for six, most places. but down here near la, san diego, and san berdoo, my 5.0 cost me 3k in pretty good condition, minor front valance damage. but for the price, you dont find many f bodies out here for less than 1000. sux.
