Tranny & Shift Kit Questions. ..
Sup y'all. Okay, here's what I got.
First off, dunno what I did to my tranny, but now it doesn't shift easily from neutral to OD for example.
Well i need to actually press the button instead of just flickin' it back as normal. And when I do press it and pull it back it goes to D not OD and I have to click it up 1. Hard to explain, anyone understand? It's not going in the correct slots basically and I need to pull it back then forward to get where i need it to go.
Also, anyone have a shift kit on their v6? what brand, B&M, transgo? notice any and what diff., and which did you buy?
Thanks folks!

Check the linkage underneath the car. The shift cable attaches to the trans on the driver's side of the car. The cable sheath is held to the trans by a bracket that uses two bolts of the trans pan. Then the center cable reaches out to the "shift lever" on the TRANS (not on the shifter). Sounds like you might've dropped one of the bolts from the support bracket.
I have the B&M Shift Improver kit, and put it in myself, along with a B&M 4-3 Kickdown Kit. I didn't know back then that the B&M Shift Kit is bad news for the 700r4. The kit 'of choice' is the TransGo kit- but, naturally, the TransGo is $120 as opposed to B&M's $20. Still, the B&M kit can damage the 700r4... and when I rebuild this trans, it's coming out, and the TransGo is going in.
Credit due to the B&M; it did make my 1-2 shift much harder, and the 2-3 shift a bit harder. If I drive "easy", I don't feel the upshifts at all. If I had smaller rear tires instead of these P275/60r15's (close to 11" wide), I could probably chirp them. I think my next rear tires will be smaller. I hate to lose the "hot rod look" I've got going now, but smaller tires would make me faster at the track (to help with effective gear ratio AND less weight AND less road friction), and I could take corners better. Now that I don't race on the streets anymore, I just get my kicks at the racetrack, and in cornering.
I -LOVE- the 4-3 kickdown kit. You know how you'll be on the highway, doing 60 MPH, and press down on the gas to pass someone, and the trans downshifts? Well, with the 4-3 Kickdown kit in, my trans won't downshift! It's great. It actually stays in 4th gear, and makes 4th (OD) a "useable" gear instead of just a cruising gear. If I want it to downshift into 3rd, I either have to mash the pedal to the floorboard, or, I shift it manually (with my B&M Megashifter). Plus, at high speeds, you can actually use 4th gear.
I also added a remote trans filter (Summit), and a B&M Supercooler. These two pieces make me feel much better when I'm flogging my car on a hot day!

Thanks for the tips Tom.
Unfortunately over just 1 day, now it doesn't catch any of the gears. I put it in reverse last night and it got stuck in that gear. Pressed the button to move it to another gear and it didn't catch a thing, the shifter went up and down freely without stopping anywhere, had to move it to P and shut her off. any ideas?

Had the same prob in my '92, in fact exactly the same. my shift positions were feeling loose, and then one day, at the Whataburger drive-through, the tranny stuck in reverse as I tried to put it in Drive. Turns out the shift cable came loose then just broke altogether. May be what your problem is.

wow, yup exactly the same, was loose first, then pooped out altogether.
got it fixed today. turns out the 2 bolts that hold the cable to the shifter just plain came off.
guy at the shop said it happens frequently with our f-bodies. just happens sometimes, no rhyme or reason. thanks tho folks.
