rear diff. leak...

I have a 1989 Camaro V-6, 5-spd. and 3.45 gears.

The car has less than 90,000 orig. miles on it.

I think it has a leak where the driveshaft enters the differential.
I checked the diff. rear cover (10bolt), and it's not leaking.

So, does the front part of the diff. have a gasket or a seal that is worn and needs to be replaced?

I hope I don't have to replace the whole differential :-(

Hm, bad news; to change the seal in the front of the diff you need to pull the pinion nut off, and remove the pinion. Then you have to set the pinion preload when you reinstall it. Could the diff be leaking from the top, thru the vent tube? Could trans fluid be running along the torque arm? Could your brake fitting on top of the axle be loose?

How bad is the leak.
I know people who have leaks, and well that pinion sucks.
So they just refill it if it is leaking slow.
until they get the time and resources to fix.

Good point! Check the level by removing the fill plug on the passenger side of the differential, near the driveshaft. It's a pipe plug; use your ratchet handle in it to spin it counter clockwise. (Scrape off all the crud first.) A "full" diff is one that, when you put your finger inside that fill hole, you feel fluid that's almost even with the fill hole. I can never feel the fluid, so I just extend my finger inside the hole (hahaha), keeping it horizontal, and if I pull my finger out and it's got fluid on it (haha, oh, man), I know it's full.

Beware- gear oil smells like cat ****. Er, more like cat **** times 1000? Phew.

Before going through the headache of swaping pinion check the fluid level. If it is ok pull your rear drums off and check the wheel cylinders.
