refinishing rims..

I have a 1987 Iroc z.The rims have some dark spots on them and some of the plastic or clear is coming off. Is there a product out there that will strip the clear off so I can sand the wheels then polish them? I'm not sure if thats the correct route but I did something like that to some 1993 grand prix rims and they came out nice.if anyone has refinished there rims themselfs or know how to let me know. I love stock rims just they look bad now.

Re: refinishing rims..

correct.

I couldn't find the air craft stripper in town so I just bought some paint stripper made for metals by klean strip at a local hardware store, probably very similar stuff. I tried it last night, it worked great! Brushed it on, 10 minutes later most of the clear coat was peeling up, I wiped that off with a rag and spread some more on and that got most of the rest. Sprayed it off with a pressure washer and was good to go. The metal that had the clear coat on it looked perfect. The spots that had been missing clear coat cleaned up pretty easily wetsanding with 600 grit paper. I'm going to do the rest of the rims this weekend and then polish them with some aluminum polish and see how they look, I kind of like the machining lines in them so I don't want to sand them too much.

Make sure you do it in a well ventilated area, I did it in the garage with the door wide open and my eyes were burning from the fumes when I was spreading it on!
